I am planning to clean up my '69 interior this summer. It does not have AC. It's in really good shape, so a little cleaning here and a little paint there.
There is this strange small protruding flexible plastic upsidedown "tray" near the top of the center console, just below the "CORVETTE" plate. It is about 2 inches wide and sticks out about 1/2-3/4 of an inch, and appears to be riveted in place.
I originally thought it was some "Bubba" piece of plastic shoved in to hide a gap, but I inspected another very original '69 the other day and there was one there too, but it looked better than mine.
'69 owners out there-what is this little tab, what is its function, and is it possible to get the old one out and replace with a new one?
Here is a pic of it on my 70. It is roght below the corvette letters.
THAT'S IT!!
What is its function? As you mention in your first post, that kind of makes sense. Does air actually blow out of it when the heater or defroster are on (I can't test because my engine's not yet back in the car)?
Can it be removed and replaced? Mine looks bent up and kind of ragged. Talk about cheap. This little thing looks like a discarded piece of plastic packaging material!
It's a defrost air duct. Yes you can replace it. Remove the metal housing that says CORVETTE and wiper switch plate. The plastic duct can be seen then.
