Default Painting my 77

I'm getting ready to paint my 77...

The door are off, but the hinges are still installed on the pillars (not the doors).

I'm trying to decide whether to remove the hinges before painting or leave them installed. I know it's going to be easier to align the doors if I don't remove them, but I'm more interested in a factory appearance than I am in making it easy.

Does anyone know if the cars were painted with the hinges installed or not from the factory?

Thanks
Troy

I believe the cars were painted with the doors hung. So if you leave the hinges on the pillars it will be close to the way St. Louis painted them.

Alan

Are you doing a color change?

i just did a color change and removed the hinges and painted each one separately. just think how much better you will sleep at night knowing the back of the hinges are painted.

In reality, its a small detail and the doors are HELL to line up anyway with or without removing the hinge. I would say, no matter what the factory did, do what you have to do to get it to look how you want it. Sure they may have painted it with the doors on but they may have also had a guy that just spent all day painting hinges too.

I cant actually answer your question though, sorry.

I think the doors were hung and when you look at a factory car the inside part (part inside door frame) of the hinge is black. I painted mine doors off but hinges on. Like someone else said they are tuff anyway you do it but it's worse if you pull the hinges. I pulled mine and reinstalled several times before paint to check alignment but I still dread putting them back on because of the danger of chipping one. BC/CC and a chip is not a good thing! My humble opinion--

Thank You all for the input and suggestions. In the end I decided to removed the hinges so that I could check for any corrosion behind the hinges and do whatever was necessary depending on what I found.

No rust, but I still media blasted the metal and treated it to a few coats of a good self etching primer for future corrosion protection.

I'll just have to be especially careful when rehanging the doors.

Thanks
Troy
