rear differential/ gears problem?

rear differential/ gears problem?
so, i am hearing a clunking sound when i put it into drive. and when i drive slow, i hear a methodical almost grinding noise so its got to be the axle or something (driver side rear)
now, i raised the rear of the car to see what would make that sound, spun the driver wheel back and forward, no problem, both wheels spin. NOW, when i spun the PASSENGER side, the drivers side wheel didnt spin... (or was it the other way around, i dont remember...) ANYWAYS, i know now the problem is somehwere in the differential (gears messed up?) so now im wondering... what do i need to do to take the differential apart? (ive got to change that gasket anyways) and what do YOU think the problem is?
edit: and if its the problem with the gears, should i get same ones? or should i upgrade? remember, im putting in an ls1/t56 combo sometime later this summer
