Might be Plastisol. The AIM should show a numbered tag for it on the installation page and there is a listing of the numbered tags at the front of the AIM.

I'm betting 3M automotive weatherstrip cement would do in a pinch.

It's available at any parts store, It's a 3M product called windshield adhesive. Comes in a big rolled up strip, with a coated papper backing. pretty cheap too.

Butyl rubber caulk is what you want. Most hardware stores carry it.

I used 3M black strip caulk under the chrome and SS trim pieces. I thought it to be very similar to what I found when I took the trim off.
Regards,
Alan

Hi Skip,
Are we talking about windshield installation or windshield trim installation?
If you got a product in a roll I believe it's used to put in a new windshield.
The material in the 3M box of 1 foot long strip sealer is used under the trim.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan I got a tube of stuff to install the windshield, the guys at the glass place told me not to use the stuff on the roll on the w/s. I used it on the back window just fine and had a bunch left over and was going to use it behind the w/s trim and under the t top trim. What do you think

I would be afraid to use that windshield adhesive (urethane) for the trim, you would probably destroy the trim if you had to take it back off. Alan 71 is referring to the 3M strips in the 1 ft lengths that should be used under the trim.

Hi Skip,
The black 3M Strip Caulk #08578, comes in a box of 60, one foot long strips.
Most auto parts stores sell it since people use it for all kinds of things in and under cars and trucks.
Regards,
Alan

Alot of bodymen I know refer to it as "Dum Dum". don't ask me why?
this stuff is great and has many uses..........one of them being a great sealant I used it to seal up the individual lines or hoses or cables that pass through the three new firewall gromets that I installed when I did my suspention over

I've got to put a back window in on a 78 so this is great info. What I'm learning here is that the round butyl rope adheres glass to metal while the caulk stripes are used to adhere the trim to the glass?

I think there the same thing, actually, but not for sure. The Butyl tape will work for both as probably the Butyl strips will. I cut the roll with scissors, it's holding the back window in as well as under the sheet metal chrome peices. It's some sticky stuff.

Hi H4,
Not Quite.
The clips and screws (if there are some) are used to install the SS trim. The 3M strip sealer is used as SEALER under the SS trim, on the A-pillars and on the trim around the openngs for the roof panels. It's not used to INSTALL the glass or trim.
Regards,
Alan

I agree with Alan, I used the butyl sealer to install the back window in my 73 but it is different that the 3M sealer that comes in the short 1 ft strips. I was about to make a big mistake and use it but I am sure glad I didn`t. I am going to get some of the 1 ft strips Monday.
