Default Custom but stock looking value

How much is a C3 that is heavily modified but looks basically stock worth? I'm thinking something with aftermarket frame - c4/5 suspension / lsX6speed, etc. Basically a car like Frankensport.

It more than likely won't be worth half of what you put into it... but why would you want to sell something like that anyway?

I have to disagree big time with this. I know personally some of the resto mods that sell for 6 figures that have not had that much put into them. Now if you have someone build it for you yes it will be but if you do it for yourself and do a GOOD job they are worth quite a lot. And ido stressGood and quality jobs. I have seen some "resto" mods tha tare done poorly or really are not a good resto mod and I would not pay much for them. There are quite a few high end ones though that are commanding big money.

I wouldn't but... I don't like to start any project without knowing how much money I am potentially throwing away

I am buying a '74 vert this weekend and I'm toying with going all out on it. I might change my mind and keep the stock frame / suspension and just do the motor / trans - but I'd really like a reliable C3 that performs well too so I am leaning towards full on.

A stock '74 Split Tail convertible is worth more stock than it would be with the mods you have in mind.

If you want to go the megabuck route, buy an otherwise dime-a-dozen beater and work your magic on her.

Most of the cars on the forum are 'custom, but stock looking'
There are only a few NCRS correct cars here. The rest are all numbers matching with O-ring calipers and stainless stell exhausts etc.

Cars like this are too modified to consider "stock-looking" even at first glance.

This is true. While I wouldn't go as far as "quite a few," the fact is there are some very top-end restomods that sell for a lot of money. It remains to be seen how that translates to suqsequent sales, however.
For example, I saw TPI conversion/C4 older cars sell for way too much money when those modifications were considered "cutting edge" but the same cars became very dated, very quickly as technology evolved, and suddenly weren't worth much of anything. I think this issue needs to be considered more "big picture."

And as Gordon mentions, there's way too many "restomods" that are just tacky/poorly done that are not worth anything from Day 1. Often the owners/builders are too close to the situation to make an unbiased estimation.

What exactly is the NCRS deduction for "o-ring calipers and stainless... exhaust?"

Not until you pop the hood. To the uninitiated it looks like a stock vette with wheels and a nice paint job from 10 ft.

What I mean by stock looking is no big wings / flares / other obvious give aways.

Basically - the average C6 owner wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't stock if the hood was closed

While it's very true that WELL DONE resto-mods have and will sell for large amounts of money, people with this kind of money to spend on a toy are not always easy to find.
Do these very expensive resto-mods depreciate?
Regards,
Alan

I would suppose it depends on how many post resto miles you put on it and how nice you keep it. I would guess they don't depreciate as fast as a newer vehicle but faster than a just as nice stock example.

I have the coin now but don't have the time. If history is a teacher when I finally get the time I won't have the coin

I've been away for a couple weeks and just caught this thread. Only comment I have is that if someone was REAL interested and wanted to perhaps make an offer for a turn-key car I'm in the process of building FrankenSport II. I would consider parting with the first one to fund completing the second one sooner than later. I'd hate to do that but I enjoy the building as much if not more than the owning, caring, driving.

Just food for thought!
