Default Engine Compartment Paint...

What have you guys used for painting your engine compartment? I would like to use something that is not an aerosol. My 2 reasons for not wanting an aerosol is 1) I don't want overspray on everything and 2) Aerosol paint seems to be more brittle... So what are your suggestions ands thoughts??

My thought is that to do a good job you need to use spray paint. I fully understand the work involved in doing this.

Alan

That looks really nice!! I guess I can kind of see where you are coming from. I was thinking about painting it on with a foam brush, color sanding, and buffing by hand. What type of paint did you use?

Alan is correct, spray paint will give you the best results. Your way of doing it is much harder, just cover and tape off what you don't want to paint. I used Duplicolor satin black.

I'll take your guys advice... I currently have my engine out anyway... So i guess it can't be that bad! My goal is to make engine compartment look pretty and not like a nightmare like it did before. I don't think it is really going to matter what I do when people see a brand new big block sitting under the hood!

Thanks for the advice!

Here's what I was able to do with spray. We all know what a nice job the factory did to finish the firewall so I thought I'd do something about it. I filled & smoothed until it looked like one piece, the way it should of been. I used Dupli-Color primer & engine enamel, 3 coats of each. Satin is correct but I went gloss to add a little bling......

Just finished painting my firewall and engine bay over the weekend. Motor is out, but there are lots of wires and hoses in place. I saved paper towel and TP rolls for about 3 months and used them to covers everything. I don't have any pictures yet, but it looks great. Can't wait to get the motor in!
Used a low gloss black epoxy paint, shot on with air brush. Moved things out of the way all the way around. I'll post some pics later on down the road.

Hi F90,
I used Krylon #1613, semi-flat black. It's getting VERY hard to find, my next choice is the spray that VV mentioned, the John Deere Blitz Black.
Regards,
Alan

also what is your opinion for Krylon Pumpkin Orange to use for the engine, is it the correct orange (the cap looks good and so does the pic) , and will it withstand engine heat??? thanks....Tom

PS: all of the above engine compartments look great, can I hire you guys????? Hope mine will turn out just as good as all of yours did....nice job

Alan 71, SEVNT6, rayluka,

Your engines look great. If NCRS, please tell if you had it NCRS judged after painting and if so, what did you repaint, and did you take a points ding for repainting?

How about the heat of the engine compartment... If I go with krylon.. my paint isn't going to soon start peeling or flaking off will it?

Krylon is fine for the enigine compartment, not the engine itself. I painted mine with 1613 2 years ago and its still holding up fine. I can personally attest to people who have had it last many many more years than that.

Thanks for the pics, fellas! Gave me some great ideas. I'm in the same boat... my firewall looks like crud and needs to be cleaned up and repainted, but I just dropped the new engine in back in October and I don't want to go through the hassle of taking it all back out.
