I have 255x60x15 on my car and the only issue I have is on tight left turns the front left tire rubs on one of the bolt heads that attaches the rear of the wheel well to the frame.
Not causing any problems though for the tire but the bolt head is really shiney.
255's will not fit properly on lots of 72 C3's. I think that you can only 'guarantee' that 235's will fit on the front. Personally, I think 255's are too darn wide for the front; I went with 235's for all tires on my '71 and am happy with it (of course, I don't street race it).
I have 255 60 15's on my 72 and I don't have a problem...when I turn the wheels the tires does come close but no rubbing at all. I bought the car with that size tire on it and I like the way it looks but....when I do need tires I might go a bit smaller.

So 7T1vette, do you think it is the loose manufacturing tolerances that account for some '72's being able to accommodate 255's while other can't?
Yes. It's just a 'stack-up' of all the frame, chassis, & body components. On most cars, those tolerancing errors will average out to something near nominal clearance...on others, they stack more toward 'tight' or 'loose'. All of them should have been able to accept a stock-sized F70-15 (215R70x15) tire and still have clearance; the wider tire you install, the higher the 'odds' that it will rub.
I went with 235/60/15's on the front of my '72 (the 255's on the front were rubbing on the frame as described above) - on the rear, I went with 255/60/15's (the 255's on the rear were close to the ebrake, but were clear of it)
I have 245/60-15's all around on my stock 72 with no problems. The diameter on the stock F70-15's was approx, 26.9 inches, on a 245/60 15 it is 26.6 inches (a bit too short but reasonable0. The diameter for the 235/60 15's is 26.1 which is really approaching too small in diameter for your speedometer to be correct and for your gearing to be correct (will take more revs for equal mph). The 255/60 15's are best for diameter, but will likely rub.
