hand them a bill, for the cost of the vehicle.
seriously do not let them get off ... scott free for loosing the trim plate.
that is a major money hit, wwhen it comes time to sale the car.
if they painted the car, do not pay them until they produce all the parts they took off.

WHAT!? They never should have removed it, just masked it off. I agree with the above post. If they can't find it, deduct $$$ from their fee. Do you have pics of the original pad?
I think Paragon and maybe some other vendors make reproduction trim pads.
Good luck.

You need to push this with the shop. The loss of the original tag will always make the car look funny. Did they drill out the rivets to take it off? Why would anyone do that? You also need to be sure to input all the correct info on the repro.
Is the shop a reputable outfit? Some 'sleezy' folks would steal your trim tag to put on another bogus car. If you haven't paid them...don't...until they find your tag. If you have paid them, get an attorney involved right away.

The whole story of "I took your trim tag off to paint your car, and now I lost it...." would have my paranoid meter pinned in the red zone in half a second flat. I would get real aggressive real fast. If you drag your feet, they will likely get a repro and tell you they "found it" figuring you won't know the difference (I would bet I wouldn't), meanwhile your original goes onto a fake car.
when i bought this car it was in primer and the body was off, the owner at the time said the body shop he was using had the tag, i have the car completed and after a year or so i gave up on him and his body shop finding it, so now im forced to get a repo. the car is all original, same color and interior that came out of the factory, so thats the story, thanks greg.

Have you paid for it? Do you have a title? Is it the correct VIN? Did you call the local State Police to have them run the VIN for any outstanding concerns?
so what.. it is just a trim tag.. unless you have a very rare combo then there is not much financial gain on counterfeiting a trim tag... plus one has to spend the bucks to paint and do an entire interior in order to change it to a rare combo... not worth it with what you might get back......
maybe a c2, or a Z28 where the trim tag can say someting real valuable.. but not a c3..
