My Vette of 1973 is currently blue and I envisaged in September/October repaint it in his color of origin, ORANGE METALLIC 980.
I gave my painter who works with the DUPONT products the codes color found on the Net. http://www.corvettepaintcodes.com/
After 3 months of many requests, my painter comes to obtain from his supplier the mixture to repaint my car. Minor problems ....... this mixture contain a “pearly” component and my painter called for that this mixture is not the good. Pearly and metallic are 2 different things and the “pearly” did not exist in 1973.
What think about it?
Can somebody it give me the composition in DUPONT products for an ORANGE CORVETTE METALLIC of 1973 ?
...this is a pic of my original paint '74 code 80L. It is the exact same "coding" as '73 980. Check the last line codes for '73 & '74. There is no "pearl" in it, but does have very fine "gold" dust metallic in it.
Thank you Paul,
Indeed the color orange metallic for one 74 is identical to that of one 73 (even reference).
Does somebody have the "magic formula" produces Dupont of it to make this color?
The gold metalflake paints were 'borrowed' from Cadillac's "Firemist" series. I believe the same metalflake was used with different paint colors. Not much help...but that's all I know about it.
Six months after..... my painter finally obtained, coming from DUPONT USA, a plate painted with orange metallic.
Painting was carried out with products with solvent. It's necessary now to transform it to the current standards “with water” and without solvent.
However by looking at the plate, I'm astonished that the metal particles are very discrete and almost invisible.
That the owners of Vette Orange Metallic (code 80 - 1973 or 1974) think about it. Is what the effect “metallic” is really very discrete or then the sample given to my painter is of bad quality?
In low light conditions, you can't really tell that it is a metallic paint. But in sunlight, etc., the gold metal flakes show their 'stuff'. It is much more subtle than paint with larger flakes, but you definitely know it's a metallic paint when there is light on it.

....another comparision is a 1977 Orange Corvette. It "appears", at least to me to be the exact same color only WITHOUT the fine "yellow gold" metallic in it. I know it looks a different shade but my opinion is it's because it's a "flat" Orange with no metallic in it. I've had my original paint Orange '74 next to an original paint Orange '77 and that is what it looks like to me.

Hello from France ,
Some pics of my Vette back from painting (finally)….I'm happy with the result and the color seems to me very similar to the original color ......... still a few weeks to reassembly and finally the pleasure to drive again with my 454
Looks fantastic, last summer I saw a '73 painted this colour but he went with a larger sized metal flake. It really popped in direct sunlight, I am looking fwd to seeing more pics of your complete vette.
No there are not large particles of metal in my painting but rather of fine “gold” dust metallic which is seen especially when the sun “strikes” the car.
I went up the rear part these last days and I post you some pics
