Default Dash Speaker

Hello everyone
I recently purchased a 1968 L79 convertible. There is a speaker mounted in the dash where the typical glove box would be. I know the 68 did not have a conventional glove box but not sure what they do call it, Anyway I am told that this was a rare factory option and I am trying to confirm that it is. Can anyone please give me some direction or a name of a book that I can find the truth out about this? I am sure that this will be a conversation I will be having at shows.
The trim tag says e27 983
Thanks for you help

Do you have any documentation that shows what options came on the car like the tank sticker or window sticker? If so it would show up there.

I have never heard of nor seen a speaker in the passenger lower dash panel option.

The '68 passenger-side dash panel had no speaker 'option' nor was there any map pocket. It was just a plain, smooth surface; the map pocket thing was added in '69. The '68 & '69 cars had their radio speakers behind the lower kickpanels on each side. They are simple to replace once you remove the door sill plates, then the outside edge of the dash panels; after that just remove 1 or 2 screws from the kickpanels and remove them.

You can replace the original speakers with low power (25-30 watts; no more than 50 watts) speakers having an 8 ohm impedance rating. {The Delco radio was designed for 10 ohm speakers. 8 ohm speakers will not cause damage to the unit; it may have some distortion at higher volume levels, however.}

Hi Adam,
It looks to me like the speaker was added when your radio was changed.
The 'rare option' is a very good tale though.

Alan
