Dumb question, need answer
I have a black 69. Coworker claims there were multiple years with no black from GM in the 70's.
True or false?

True. No black from 70-76, probably due to quality control. Black showed EVERY flaw!!

Absolutely true, making real code 900 black 68-69s, especially roadsters, a premium. Several of the ones I looked at used to be green. Had to travel quite a ways to get a real one.

did you buy that a resto project? I don't have the vert, but I have full options including the auto in a coupe.

After Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 the Supreme Court finally stepped in and required that GM resume production of Black Corvettes!

It wasn't meant to be a project when I bought it.

My Mother worked for a paint company (Spartan)
in the 70's and I tested many auto paints on my pushbike (the Labtechs would strip and paint my frame every couple of months and see how well the paint held up) these were FORD Australia colors
and there was no black,
It was said that black wasn't a "safety color".
The darkest you could get was "Gun Metal" gray
or "Midnite" blue.
My Kawasaki ZX11 '92 motorcycle is "black" but
Kawasaki list it as "ebony" (which is "darker than
black" according to a Kawasaki parts guy
).

I had a good friend who had 3 69s. All black/black, 427/400, coupes. The first 2 were stolen in Laurel, Maryland, but the last they let him keep.
VERY serious looking and acting cars!!!!!

Alan

But that is not to say there were no black Corvettes produced in the early to mid 70's.
I know of at least one '72 that the owner produced documentation showing he ordered it black.

The Black Book does say that about 30 Vettes were painted black in 73.
I wonder if these reported black Vettes had an actual color code or "spec"?

Seems like I read where the guy with the '72 didn't have any code on his trim tag for paint.
I thought "spec" usually meant primer. But I guess it could mean anything.

The handful of custom painted cars from GM in black that are properly documented have to be worth absolutely stupid money.
Kinda like the "there were no production Corvettes produced in 1983, but..."
