Basically what the "TOOL" is that this guy sells is a larger **** with a set screw drilled into the side, which uses an Allen hex key to tighten.....
Slip the larger knurled **** over the existing small ****, then tighten in the set screw with the Allen hex key, this enables a much better push & turn GRIP .............it's that simple..........UNFROZE MINE !!!
Mine didn't when I first got it so I replaced the worm gear in the odometer and now it works fine. I use it all the time to do silly things like track my fuel economy (or the lack thereof).
My cable was really tough to work so I took it apart and lubed it up with some powdered graphite and now it is as easy as new.
Mine works, and like others, the reset worked for a while when I got the car but the last time I tried to reset it, it didn't work. I haven't futzed with it, but it is good to see the pictures of what is supposed to be going on in there.
On my car the odo works ok, but the trip its dead, no reset nor the numbres spins...
Speedo works ok...
Try pulling down on the reset ****. In a prior thread on this, some folks said that worked. As the pictures above showed, pushing in on the reset **** disconnects the driven gear from the drive gear. If the **** is stuck in this position, the numbers won't turn. Pull it down, and if that is the only problem, it should work again.
Well, Holy Crud! I thought mine never worked until I had the brainwave today to push and TURN the ****! I could not believe it - it still works perfect. So, I thought I would search the forum and found this thread. If only I had searched before....
'Just shows how experience can differ: All the non-working trip odometers I've had or worked on were not due to the above-menioned cable issues. They require removal and rebuild.
My 76 works, you push the button and turn. If you turn it one way it goes up 1/10 at a time. If you turn it the other way it turns backwards until all the digits are the same, then you can reset it at all zeros or 999, 888 etc .
That always seemed a little odd. Is that they are supposed to work?
That's exactly how my '76 works. I didn't know that until I got gas a couple months ago and pushing it up like the newer cars didn't work so I tried turning it. As luck would have it, I turned it the wrong way first and it went up a tenth so I turned it the other way and it went to zero.
My trip odometer was not working at all last year so I pulled the speedometer and sent it off to be repaired. When I got it back, I reinstalled it and went for a drive. Unfortunately, I immediately realized the speedo calibration was way off. Took the dash back apart, removed the speedometer and sent it off to be calibrated again. This time it came back perfectly calibrated and I was a happy camper for awhile. Now the trip odometer is not working at all and is actually sitting cockeyed in the housing. At this point, I don't care if I ever have the ability to reset it, I just want the damn thing to work and I am really annoyed at having to tear the dash back apart. Is there any hope I can get the trip odometer fixed and have it stay fixed for awhile?
