68-72 4-speed shifter mount
Does anyone have a picture? A friend says it mounts to the x-member, and i say the trans. Anyone? Thank you

Crossmember. That is why they had problems. The motor and trans would twist a little during hard acceleration and the rods would bind up. The Hurst shifter bolted to the trans and was a much better shifter.

Wow, that seems backwards. The 1st camaro/Chevelle 4-speed shifters were on the x-member too. But, when the motor/trans would flex on the rubber motor mnts, the x-member mntd shifter wouldn't go along for the ride and would bind up. So, they mntd the shifter to the trans. Seems they had the "right' idea on Vettes and went to the wrong idea. Makes no sense. Thank you (anyone else wanna weigh in? with a pic?)

Hi R,
If you look carefully in these 2 pictures you can just see the black mounting bracket to the right side of the shifter body.
GM do something BACKWARD!!! NEVER!!!
Regards,
Alan

The vertical shifter mounting bracket mounts to the horizontal transmission mount support bracket...one end of which attaches to the transmission mount and the other end to the cross member.

Razzle: dug out my stuff and found this. Hope they help explain the images Alan 71 provided:
If you need different angles than these, lemme know. Good Luck.

GM did it to isolate the shifter and keep cruising vibrations down, obviously someone who never power shifted a solid lifter Vette at redline wanted this change in 1966.

Hi S LT1,
Are you implying that some Corvette owners didn't shift their transmissions in the proper manner and at the proper rpm?
I never heard of such a thing!

Alan

4 Spped Bracket Mounting Bolts on the Cross Member
I have a 1969 4 speed that currently has a Hurst, but I am restoring it to original Shifter (Crazy???).. I bought a complete shifter, bracket and rods that came out of a 1969.
I looked at the mounting holes on the rear side of the Cross member where the bracket mounts and it appears that the cross member has 2 5/16 inch tapped holes for rear of the 4 speed shifter bracket. The picture in this thread shows bolts and nuts to hold the back end of the bracket.
The bracket I purchased has mounting holes that look like 3/8 inches where it attaches to the cross member.
Did the 1969 Bracket have smaller holes or did someone just drilled out the tapped holes on the frame.
Just curious and would like to keep it original.. Thanks
