Powerglide Clunk!!!!

Default Powerglide Clunk!!!!

I just bought a '66 coupe, 327/300, powerglide. I know nothing at all about the suspension or the trans. When I put the car in gear, there's a huge clunk, and when the car downshifts when stopping, it clunks again, going into first gear. After I have driven the car a while, the clunking is somewhat diminished, but it's still there. Question is, is this common with a powerglide and what does it take to fix it? Thanks in advance.

The "snubber" rubbers on the differential are worn out. That puts slop in the drive line whenever you shift in and out of neutral [from drive or reverse]. The replacement hardware is only about $25...but replacing it is a PITA.

well, i am glad it's not a transmission problem. this car only has 57, 600 miles on it. thanks for your help.

It is possible that your problem is inside the tranny. But, by your description and the fact that this is a very common problem on older cars (rubber gets old/hard with time regardless of mileage), the odds are with you.

Default clunk when putting in gear

I read that the clunk to shift to gear is normal.I read it when I went looking up power gflide transmissions.ON my 64 vette it also clunks.
