Default Any paint gurus out there.

I have to make an educated guess on a black that will match the current black on my 72. The car was repainted at some point after the 75 front end was put on and my local paint purveyor shot it with his color computer analyzer and can not get a good color off of the paint. I assume the repaint was in the 72 - 75 paint color. My initial idea is to use 1976 GM black.

My question is.....
Do any of you paint gurus out there know if the formula for black stayed the same for those years?

I have to repaint the hood and front bumper. There are lines that break it up so it won't show as much as trying to blend a panel.
BTW, I re-glassed where bubba installed the hood pins.
Thanks
Dave

The only way you are going to match the color is by eye. take the car to your bodyshop and ask them to make a paint sample to your color. bring the car on a sunny day for the best results. to make it even easier just bring them the gas lid and leave it with them until they can do it at their convienience.

BTW..... there was no factory black on corvettes between 70 thru 76.

They will also have to put the primer they will be using on the test sample before shooting the black paint. If your car has a clear coat, that will need to be done, as well. Otherwise, you can't be sure of a good match. If you can determine what paint was originally used for your car (brand and color code), that would simplify things a lot.

Had the same problem with a custom truck I owned. I had a paint supplier with this camera like device that was push against the truck and shot it and matched up the paint perfect! A place called Finish Master was the paint supplier it worked! I would not of believed it if it did not work! Try it is all I can say!

I shoot all my own paint. I'll guess I'll just shoot a few test panels.
Even with the "camera looking thing"/ paint analyzer it took 3 times to match the paint on my 67 Camaro.

In all my years of restoring cars I have only been lucky once to have an owner that has changed a color and kept some records of a paint code. Back in the day...... you just kept the balance of the paint in the original can and threw it away when you cleaned your shop after it had been sitting on the shelf for 5 years and was rock hard. By then you forgot what you used it on. I keep records when I shoot a car that goes right in the restoration progress binder.

I didn't realize there were no black bodies from 70-76.
The black and saddle is a nice combination.
Live and learn.

Do you know if the 69 Tuxedo Black and the 77 Black are the same paint codes?

I bought a front bumper that needs to be repainted due to spider webbing. I temporarily installed it on the car for fitment and it was already painted black. It matched perfectly. The guy I bought it from said it was from a 76 but it might have been from a 77 factory black car? Do you think the 77 black would be a good starting point? It's the direction I'm leaning.

I had a customer bring his red Corvette in that no one could match because it faded. He was hit in the back and had a new bumper cover installed. All I did was fade the darker red halfway through the doors then re-clear the back end and doors. Even up close, no one could tell. Maybe that would be an option for you. The reds were about three shades off. Black shouldn't be much worse.

It's called a paint spectrometer and their are value is dubious I never saw one match the paint perfectly. You are probably going to get a match just as easy by looking at the paint deck. We sprayed BASF and they have a paint deck with about 1300 colors in it and the variations of all the standard OEM colors. The painter can hold the paint deck up to your car in the sunlight and come up with a close match and then do a spray out and adjust from there. It's assumed that it is two stage paint they have one for single stage also. In your favor black is the easiest paint to match red and silver the hardest.

take your gas door and have it scanned, it will be a perfect match, better than eye catching it, any good paint shop will do this for you.

Thanks

Black is the easiest? On a C6 vette I would rather paint silver

Black is by far the easiest you never have to blend in to the next panel if you are repairing a door or a fender.

You can't really tell by the pic but the color matched real close.
The hood pins are gone and the hood repainted and the new fiberglass bumper is painted and installed.
