Default Help with Handles

Hello,

I'm trying to replace my outer door handles on my 76, however I can't seem to get the pin to push though the lever on the lock mech. any tricks of the trade??? its seems to be at a angle and its not pushing straight through. Its trying my patience....

Also I have replaced the hinge pins and springs,

1, Now that I have replaced the pins and bushes, the door striker can't be adjusted high enough to line up the door, any ideas?

2, Also the hinge spring keeps jumping out when I close the door, thought it had snapped the first time, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks Martin - Scotland

Did you check [before you installed the handle] that the rod would fit through the hole first? You might have one with a manufacturing defect.

Hey, I have only replaced the handles it's the original rods, I did notice that on the old handle the plate that the rod hooks through is at an angle and new ones are straight? Should I bend it? Or are they meant to be straight?

The rods that connect the handles to rest of the mechanism are different from left side door to right side door (found this out he hard way) easy to get crossed plus a lot of the after market replacement outer door handles are made poorly. Is it possible to post some pictures of what is going on with your project? I think it would give everyone a better idea on solving your situation.

I ran into a similar situation when I was replacing the lock cylinders on my 80. The former owner did not have the keys for the doors, so I bought a set of lock cylinders from the local parts store. When I started the job (of COURSE I started with the right side) everything went great. It's tough working in the small space given, but overall it went smoothly.......until.........I set to work on the left side. Little did I know, the cars with power locks have a different length of stud on the lock cylinders for the driver's side!! So I have to get ANOTHER set of locks; ones that will fit MY application.

This may be similar to what you are experiencing, but without some photos, I'm just guessing. Sounds like something is either backwards, in the wrong hole, or wrong application....but again, that's simply a guess.

I just did mine. Take the three screws out of the door latch and it will pull upward and get the rod high enough to barely force it into the hole.
