Default 71 speaker wire confusion

Going back to stock with my 71 mono radio. Have everything figured out from searching except for speaker wires. Original radio rebuilt with correct plugs coming out the back. Original speakers, but speaker wires were cut for an aftermarket radio. The part I don't understand is how the two wires from each front speaker get down to one plug. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi SS,
As I remember there is a seperate harness with 1 connector at one end for the radio connection and then the wires split for left and right speakers. There has to be a harness because I can see the wire leads on the right side speaker are short (8"), so something must run from the radio to the speaker connector.
Hope this helps you some.
Regards,
Alan

Seems to me there is an external amplifier that plays a part in this whole setup also. Mine is in a container on the shelf and If you need me to I can take it down and lay it out to let you know what goes where.

PM me if you don't get your answer and I'll get that for you. I only get on here about once in the mornings and again in the evenings. Can't seem to get to the bottom of that darn honey do list.

The split is my focus, both speaker wires were cut, so do the wires coming from both speakers go to one plug in the middle?

The speaker wires goes to an amplifier part, called a "Convector" in the AIM, with 3 wires going from the convector to the radio. The convector is mounted behind the "glovebox" thing on the passenger side

On a mono radio, the convector has it's own harness that plugs into pigtail on back of radio. That part I have figured OK. Now I'm thinking there has to be a "Y" harness in the middle to connect both speakers to one plug in back of radio.

Hi SS,
What you just called a Y harness is what I was trying to describe. I just can't see it without taking the dash pads loose, so I can't get a picture. Good Luck.

Alan

The 'convector' was different for a stereo version or a monaural version of the radio (stereo version had a little stereo lamp on the radio front bezel). The mono convector had just one power transistor; the stereo version had two...one for each channel. You need to have the covector match the type radio you have. You can't buy new convectors, only used ones (eBay). You could substitute a small [modern] radio amplifier unit for the convector if you like. The convectors were merely the final amplifier stage for that early design of solid-state radio.

Sorry it took so long.

Here is a picture of the back of my original 72 mono radio's connectors. The one with the blue wire is for the convector. The other one feeds the speakers.

My speaker wires are still in the dash bundled to the convector/amplifier harness. Looking at Roger's wiring diagram the black wires from each speaker are joined to the same female connector in the speaker harness.

ssdave, there is a speaker harness on ebay right now with all three connectors if you are interested.

PM me for the item number if you want.
