OK, I am not going to go pure stock on my car, but dont want anything bubbafied....and one thing I want to do is to do away with the carpet on the console side panels. I was thinking of fabbing some new panels from that plastic like panel board used on shower walls and using my interior spray die to match it to the rest of the interior. I think it will look sweet. Any input??? Thanks.

Different people will have different definitions of "bubbafied..."
You might want to check out some of the vendors the Forum. They have Leather/Vinyl covered side panels in several colors that look really nice.
I saw that, but not for the 81. the panels are different, I can buy cinnabar vinyl, so I may go that route, either way the panels are made of a crappy board so it will be upgraded, thanks.
Thats fine, I wont even put it on if it looks bad. I know I shouldnt have asked.....won't ask anything like that again...
Don't let anyone's opinion stop you from asking questions or doing what you please with "your" car. Not everyone likes the same things and thank God for that.
81pilot. The side panels from GM on my '77 are just cardboard covered with vinyl. Bubba worked at GM in the 70's? I do not see anything wrong with your idea. mds...
You can buy cloth-backed vinyl [off the roll] with similar surface grain at about any fabric warehouse outlet. Use vinyl dye mixed to your interior color code to match it all up. Use your poly sheet, cover it with vinyl [tastefully, of course], and recolor it. Done deal.
77's had vinyl covered console side panels, 78-82 had carpeted ones. The panels were just fiber board with vinyl (77) or carpet (78-82) applied to them. Corvette America sells the bare fiberboard side panels for about $25-29 for the pair. They will also sell vinyl by square yard. You might want to consider buying a pair of the stock panels and covering them with cinabar vinyl, for a different look. If you ask, they may even be willing to cover a set of 81 panels in cinabar for you, it shouldn't be difficult for them as they cover the 77 panels in their factory already.

To many people waste time taking about how this or that vette was ruined because it was modded/custom, yawn...
I love custom because stock is dull to me...sure some mods are in better tastes than others ( personal taste )...that doesnt make all mods bads that doesn't mean stock is bad ( no more beautiful car than a 69 vert bone stock ) just that it's not for me, and when people freak out on my custom touches I am flattered that I am not a sheep in a flock,...not that being a sheep is bad either if it is the persons choice,
My point is do what you like to please yorself, do not worry one little bit what the next fellow thinks of your mods

I already have a lot of marine grade grained black vinyl from some work I have done on bike seats etc.. and I have the dye already, that is a great idea! I still may use the stiffer back and glue the vinyl to the board, thanks!

I had never heard of "Bubba" before this forum, but have came across his work before. On all of my projects even custom tanks, fenders and paint, I drag my wife to look at it and ask if it looks like I did it or if it looks ameteur, if she hesitates at all it gets changed. So nothing will look gawdy, I really just want a cleaner more custom look, but tasteful. Thanks!
