Default 1978 Engine color... blue?

I went out to eat with some friends last night and after dinner they were showing me pictures of a '78 he used to own. The hood open picture showed a blue engine... Is this correct? I didn't think they engine color change until they were being built in Bowling Green... maybe I'm wrong. Thoughts? ?

Hi,
I believe the engine color changed from orange to blue during the early part of the 77 model year.
Regards,
Alan

Chevy changed over to blue engine paint when unleaded gas was mandated in 1975.

Blue is the correct color on a '78.

I have a very very original '75 and it's correct engine color is orange. 1975 is when they changed to unleaded gas... that part is correct.

i repainted my block corporate blue before i rebuilt the engine, it was black from the grease, when i cleaned it off it was blue. At first i thought the car had a Pontiac block in it haha. but after a check i found out it was right

as you can tell keeping it stock was extremely important to me.

The blue engine had nothing to do with unleaded gas. It was a big "thing" in GM at the time to re-make its image. All the plants had to go to blue paint schemes. That kind of thinking led to the start of GM's demise.

I remember pretty well back to 76/77.
My parent's neighbor was showing off his brand new Oldsmobile and was a bit curious about the orange motor. Unfortunately I was the one to tell him it was a Chevy motor.
He was a bit pizzed!
Apparently so were a lot of other Olds buyers.
Shortly after GM went with the corporate blue for all their motors.

Yup, this is true. GM dealt with quite a few lawsuits in the later 70's because they quietly switched to a "corporate" engine program and did away with many of the Buick, Olds, and Pontiac motors. Changing to a standard blue color was one way they let the buyers know it was a "GM" engine, not a Chevy, or an Olds, or a Pontiac. There were Olds 403's in the Trans Am, Buick 231 V6's in everything, the Pontiac "Iron Duke" 4 banger in Chevys, etc. Alan is right, it happened in early '77. I bought a new Camaro in '78 and remember being kind of shocked when I saw all of the blue under the hood.

Blue may be correct, but it still doesn't look right to me. I painted my 79's engine chevy orange, the color small block chevy's should be!

I was never a fan of Corporate Blue..... until now. That looks great.....especially with the other modifications.

I stand corrected. I forgot about the Oldsmobile engine switch.
