You could probably do that, if you include the title, too. Then he would have to pay taxes, etc. when he goes to the DMV to get his "car" legal. {I assume the guy has a car that needs a VIN plate and title.} You are then left with a car that you can no longer sell...except for parts.
Of course, he could be a thief who stole someone else's car and wants to "clean" it up so he can drive it or resell it.
Hi,
I've seen vin tags and titles for sale at Carlisle.
On mid years the brace that the vin tag and trim tag is riveted or spot-welded to has been cut out so it can be welded into the NEW car with the original tag rivets or spot-welds in place.
Regards,
Alan
Is a Corvette that's been made from 2 cars twice as much fun?
I have to ask......whay would someone want to purchase a VIN tag? There is a guy on CL who advertised he was selling "dash tags" for a 68.......being the purist dope I am, I called thinking they might be radio / wiper tags. When I called, he said it was the VIN tag off a 68 that he claimed was burned to death in a fire. He advised he wanted $1000.00!!!!
One problem facing Auto Theft Detectives now is "cloning" vehicles using VIN tags.......Sorry, but I just cannot see a legit purpose for owning one unless you have the car.......maybe I misunderstood you????
Not to be a smart a$$ or insulting, but why would anyone want to buy the title and VIN from a '79? There's no value to speak of in a '79 for that. It seems any self-respecting crook who wants to fake a car would do a chrome bumper VIN for the same effort. The potential illicit payoff would be larger.

I believe gray areas aside in most cases it is illegal to sell a VIN plate and title for the reason of using it on a car it didn't come on,
And no offense to 79 fans and owners it was the biggest production year of the C3 and in many cases is bargain priced so why would a person want to use the VIN to revive one...I mean what legal reasons???

i agree....and as i was trying to elude to in my earlier post.....highly illegal to use this other than for a wall mount..in which case, i'd rather have a big fish or something.
I own a 78 with a builder title. It is as good of a car as anybodys car. So...if I was worried about the value of my car (Which I'm Not) I could buy this guys vin & title, run down to the dmv and register my "new"car as a 79 Corvette which was my 78 Corvette.
I would throw away my 78 vin & builder title and institute the the new 79 vin and clear title. " VIOLA", a tainted 78 transformed into a clean 79.
Am I full of horse cookies... or is this feasible?
I have a 79 THAT I am parting out CAN I SELL JUST THE TITLE AND VIN PLATE?
From experience with bikes, selling the neck with the VIN became illegal a few years ago, people would use them to legitimately title a stolen bike or salvaged totalled bike. I would assume the same would be true for cars.

I would rather have a 79-82. I'm gonna start standing up for the newer C3's, they get dissed on by too mnay people who think they are inferior, maybe worth less money, but in my opinion the beauties of the lot....now back to the thread.

I know you asked what legal reason, but the thief's reasoning is simple:
The 79 is not a car that will draw a lot of attention, but still be able to be sold easily since it is still a Vette. Theives generally steal things that have an easy turn around not singly high dollar cars usually. Harley's are stolen because of the popularity, same with Honda cars, easy to sell and populsr but blend in. The high dollar cars are stolen to strip and part out, like Escalades etc...Crooks are generally high volume, low profit per item. My BIL is a DA.
As the proud owner of a '79, I just want to say that the first thing I thought when I read this post was... Why? For a '79? Then the answer came to me. the only way I COULD get rid of the car for any kind of money was to have it totaled or stolen. Since I am risk averse, stolen sounds like the way to go for me!
PS, keep hating 79s. as far as I'm concerned in only 50 years I'll have the only original numbers matching, low performing, gas chugging, CO2 spewing example left and I'll be sitting on Easy Street!
