When I did my 71 I had it plastic media blasted. It was my understanding that soda blasting, walnut shells etc will absorb moisture if it gets into things and could cause trouble down the road.
Plastic media is also the process of choice in industry for accurately and precisley removing paint.
I stripped mine by hand. I did try some paint remover and it just seemed hard to deal with. Here is a link to another post about soda blasting. You might be o.k. with a skilled person doing it but I would try to leave the primer coat intact and then finish sanding it down.
A lot of people here swear by razor blades, I tried it also and the clearcoat and mutiple layers of paint was just too much for me. I went with an electric jitterbug with 36 grit and made sure to stop at the last coat of paint and factory primer. The 36 grit would cut like crazy but you have to pay attention and not get into the fiberglass, a lot of people would have second thought on this method but it worked for me.
Then I finished by hand.
I don't think razor blading is for me. I am intriqued with plastic media blasting. I will question this with the guy I am talking with. Any thoughts on cost for platic media blasting?
Thanks for the input.
The shop that I use has done a half dozen or more Corvettes using soda blasting. It does a terrific job and they've had no paint issues afterward.
Here's the body after three coats of gel-coat and it's first coat of primer...
It typically runs from $800 - $1000 in this area to have it done. They've also used this method on a number of other classics from Camaro's to Mustangs with similar results.
Gusto that looks awsome. This is what I'm looking for. Could I ask want it cost to get to this stage. I am budgeting and it would help.
Thanks and good luck with the project. I really appresiate the input. You can PM

Peter,
I've owned this car since 1969, however I was forced to put it in storage in 1971 when Uncle Sam called. After 36 years of storage it was due for a complete restoration. I really have no idea what it has cost thus far without doing some math and possibly exposing myself to the wrath of my better half...
I would guess I'm halfway to the cost of the new ZO-6 I had to buy my son in 2006 for a graduation present though...
