Default A/c freon conversion question

I have the old stuff in my a/c. its a little cool but not cold. garage said anywhere from 250 to 600 bucs to charge it up with old. said he could convert it to the new freon for 149. BUCS out the door. QUESTION 1, will the new freon come out as cold as old one or colder? QUESTION 2, My A/C is original. will this conversion hurt value of car and will it look different? thanks, NUTSY.

A "quick-n-dirty" conversion (which is all you'll get for $149) will not cool like R12 did. You can make R134a cool as well as R12 but it involves an adjustable POA valve and a parallel flow condenser. If your stuff is in good shape you should probably stay with R12.

If it still cools some it's not empty so it won't need all that much R12. $600 sounds outrageous, BTW...

Just call around to some auto A/C repair shops and ask if they have any R12 and if they can just add some refrigerant. If the system is working, you don't have to evacuate it before adding more to get the working pressure right. R12 is hard to find and more expensive than 134a. But the mechanic who made the quote is a rip-off artist. Lose him quick!

You might be able to find R12 around $30-$40lb. It is still around you just have to look for it. I can put my hands on about 100lbs. of it. mds...

Careful there. I would hate to see anyone get into trouble, but unless your a certified automotive AC technician, it could be illegal for you to sell/ship R12.

Most any good auto parts store has R/12, just that you must have a license to buy it.

was in the a/c business as a second job years ago. I remember when i bought R-12 for $0.19/can at one point. I would buy 4 or 5 cases at a time and just throw in back the service truck....Just wonder if China,Japan,USSR and others are in line with 134a or, are we the only ones ???

to the op- a good conversion should cost less then $500 -at least in my area.. good luck.

You might find answers to some of your questions here...

FWIW, if I decide to re-install an A/C in my C3, it'll almost certainly be on R-134a.
