On a 1980 corvette the battery is in the back. You are supposed to connect the negative clamp to part of the engine block. But you can't, what do you connect it to?
Most will connect to the neg battery terminal. I try to put the clamp ,when I can get a good connection, under the battery where the neg cable attaches to the chassis.
If you do attach to the neg term of the battery wear goggles or keep your face back from above the battery.
Something on the frame or the engine block, as the current is flowing to the starter solenoid/starter...not to the battery. This assumes that your grounding straps are in place and in good condition. The question is, "Where are you placing the positive jumper?" If you are putting that on the battery terminal, you might as well put the negative one there, too. Of course, that assumes that the battery cables are connected properly and in good condition. Good luck!

Ummmm, with the battery behind the seat attaching to the engine block or anything under the hood simply isn't possible.
I've alway just used the neg battery terminal. Hydrogen floats pretty well and by the time you get the jumpers on once you've got the door open, any collected hydrogen should have dissipated.
The poster asked where to connect the negative terminal. And, with jumper cables it's quite easy to put the positive on the battery terminal...then hook the negative to the block or frame.

Not possible. The battery is behind the seat, the negative cable connection simply won't reach.
Try this for a procedure,
1st attach the positive clamp to the dead battery + post
2. attach the negitive clamp to dead battery - post
3. attatch positive clamp to good battery + post
4. attatch negetive clamp to the engine block or ground block of good battery
remove in opposite. The main idea is to not have any sparks. I had a battery explode on me last summer, I was charging for quite awhile and it still wasn't up to par, so I hooked up a jumper box and POW. Explosion like I never saw before. Acid all over the place, luckely this was on a golf cart and not in the car. Now I take extra precautions. good luck Al

To avoid sparks I usually just hold the negative cable in one hand and touch the negative battery post with the other hand.
But seriously, I also have an 80 Vette and in the past have just connected the negative jumper cable to the negative battery post without any problems (knock on wood). Though I considered buying two sets of jumper cable so one set would be used just to connect the negative clamp to the engine block...
