The trim tag on a 74 shows paint code 22L, it is a med blue vette, why is it not 922 as per the book?
Sarge,
I believe in the later year 74's, the first 9 was dropped off by GM....So you should be OKAY. Nothing to fret about. I am sure someone here will offer a more exacting explaination.
Black Book?
My old 87 copy shows 922.
My newer 01 copy shows 22 with a notation.....
"Exterior color code on trim plates was generally a two number code followed by the letter L. The code may also appear with a 9 before the two numbers and no letter following."
edit...73 shows the 9 used, 75 doesn't. 74 transittion year?

Did the "L" stand for anything, are there other letters involved, with any meaning? My freind just inherited it and I am trying to sort out any other info, I can get him.

GM paint code convention used U for upper and L for lower when it came to two tone paint jobs. Single coloured cars used the L nonetheless.
Popular myth is that L stands for lacquer and U for urethane.

Mike;
Thanks, It is funny, because when I was looking at that "L", I thought that too, but it has nothing to do with laquer, correct? I also noted that the newer Black Books have changed the paint code numbers to 2 digits, and state that it is followed with the "L", but don't say why.
OK.....
why do BOTH my two-tone 78s use 'M' for the lower? Both the Pace and SA.
And 78 was really the first true two-tone C3.
On my Pace Car build sheet it shows...
19L black lwr
19U black upr
47M silver middle
78SA sheet is same theme.
....if I'm remembering correctly, I think the '78 Pace Cars started out as an all Black car, with the Silver added over the "all Black car".
...I think that has something to do with the way they were coded. 19L, 19U.

Yep.
I believe it wasn't till Bowling Green production that they truely went with a half and half base coat under the clear.
But aren't they coded differently?
