Default C3 Plastic Parking Brake Handle

How do you remove the black plastic handle portion from the metal arm? The spring underneath the button is not positioned correctly and doe not cause the button to pop up and engage the brake handle. Thanks for any help. Ed

I bought up a bunch of original handles for my 69, mine was all chewed up and the GM one was not original styled, so I had to make a good one from all the bad ones. The plastic handle comes off once you remove the button. To do that, it has been some years, I took pliers and wrapped the button to protect it and just started pulling till it came off. Once the button is off the handle slides off the chrome arm. The rod the button is on is barbed to hold the button on. You might have to put something like a nylon wire tie piece in the button for it to stay back on when reassembled, like a shim, pulling the button I found sometimes opened the hole in the button too much for reassembly. Bottom line is THEY DO COME APART, WITH SOME CARE..............................Good luck...................B

That handle has always been one of the most mysterious parts on my car

The guy that designed all the black plastic in these old Vettes sure didn't have much design prowess. I wonder if the furniture in his house is made of black plastic....

BUT.........Like I said, when you put the **** back on it might not grab the barbs due to being removed. I had an instance where I was working on the interior, and happened to have the windshield removed, and the **** went flying out of the car through the windshield hole when I pull on the handle to check for operation. I lost that **** and had to use another **** and I'm pretty sure I used a shim of some sort to ensure it stayed on. I also tried to disassemble one to have it rechromed, but after a long struggle with the handle and an xacto knife I gave up. I have a box somewhere with all the handles and bodies of the victims I scavenged parts from to get a good chrome and not so knicked up handle.
