Hi JR,
If your car was built in St. Louis and has lacquer on it there are still many local automotive paint suppliers that can mix acrylic lacquer for you. One of the available acrylic lacquers is made by PPG.
ORGINAL PAINT...NICE!

Alan
The new acrylic lacquers won't contain any lead, so they may appear slightly different even though color-matched. I was lucky enough to be given a pint of the good stuff (Inmont) when I bought the car...I was told it is worth it's weight in GOLD! I've been keeping it in a glass jar and use a very expensive lacquer thinner. Got myself a high quality air brush and have successfully used it for those little touch-ups on my original paint.
That is the beauty of acrylic lacquer...it can be sanded and buffed quite easily.
First you need to determine if you have a St. Louis or Bowling Green built 81. St. Louis cars used acrylic lacquer, Bowling Green cars were painted with a base coat/clear coat acrylic enamel.
The 11th digit of your VIN will be "S" for a St. Louis car and a "5" for a Bowling Green 81.
From there, a local auto body paint supplier should be able to help you.
If you put a little rubbing compound on a clean white rag and rub, look at the rag to see if color came off. If so and you say its original then its lacquer. If not then base coat clear.
thanks guy's for your responces. the car is from St Lewis and is lacquer. I have checked with all the paint supplyers in my area and they all say they no longer mix lacquer paints . I also have serched through many older body shops for hopes of finding somthing with no luck . what next ? thanks Johnrodz
Hi John,
I know there are paint suppliers in Maryland and Pennsylvania that still mix and sell acrylic lacquer.
If you run out of places to call, try John Millar at Classic Auto Restoration Services. Tell him I suggested you call him for the name and number of his paint supplier. You might even want him to do the paint touch-up. He still paints lacquer exclusively.
Regards,
Alan

I still can get here in NJ at a PPG store. Here where I get mine. http://www.gocolours.com/loc_hackensack.php. Don't know if they will ship to a home but you might be able to have it shipped to a local autobody store by you.
