Welcome! I hop in and pump my gas pedal frantically like I am inflating the car with a foot operated bicycle air pump, turn the key and after what seems like forever, it roars to life for 12 seconds then bucks me out of the seat and out the door shutting down with an angry backfire.... After I dust off I get back in and if I am gentle she'll take me for a ride.

You see, we are still getting to know each other, since I've only had my '81 for about a month or so... She'll love me one day.

Have fun, I'd be lost if it wasn't for all the great folks here.

So is that a problem with the carburetor? Mine does the same thing, just dies sometimes. Have you got yours looked at?

Most of that was in jest, of course. But it can take a bit sometimes. I don't have an answer yet, since I am a rank amatuer of a mechanic myself. However, I suspect it may be because I have an 800 CFM Edelbrock carb and canfield heads. Simply put, it may be overcarbed. I've struggled with it since I got the car and cannot seem to get it tuned right. I even took it to a shop and when I got it back, it still ran a little rough and now shifts hard as from park to reverse or first. The back end literally drops two inches sometimes when I shift into reverse. Torque?

My thoughts are: Throttle cable, Timing, TPS, carb size, vacuum leak, gremlins...

That's a new one on me. I have no idea what he was talking about it needing to be 'broken in'.

A carb is rebuilt, installed, and setup - either it's correct or it's not, it's performance shouldn't change unless it's setup is changed, or it's in need of it's next rebuild.

Can anyone think of anything the could constitute a 'brake in' of a carb?

So found out what the problem is..One half or the carb is getting a steady stream of gas. You can see the gas just pouring in there. I am having it fixed tomorrow.
