Default Build sheet removal???

Well a couple of weeks ago noticed a little drip out of the 71' (67K miles) Coupe! No big deal just got to drop the tank well when we bought it 3 yrs ago the spare tire carrier was off and we could see the build sheet still up there with a flashlight/mirror.
Well we dropped the tank over the weekend and have tried to get it off the tank (NO LUCK)! It is not in the best shape and took lots of pics for documentation but can't seem to get it to release. Is there some type of release agent we can use to get it off? Brake-Kleen, Eletrical contact cleaner or some type of solvent, just dont want to fade the print away!
Open to suggestions?

I plan to put the original in a clear plastic envelope and make a copy to put back on the tank.
Thanks Gang wro87

I have two and they came in a separate envelope when I bought the car.

FWIW: From posting on NCRS site: If the sticker is just hanging on by a thread and removal will not detract from the intactness of the sticker, then remove it as it will probably detach itself and be lost forever. If it is well preserved and the factory glue is still holding fast (in which case seperation of sticker from tank will destroy some or all of the sticker), then remove the original tank with its intact sticker, store it with the family jewels, and install a replacement tank.

You run the risk of ruining the tank sticker (Order Copy) if you can't get it off easily.

Mine all but fell off when we dropped the tank so I can't help with the removal.

However, once you get it off if you have trouble reading it due to grease and grime try using the method I outlined in this link. It worked well for me. Best of luck.

also, do not expect a 39 year old paper to even be readable, some folks take it off, copy it and place in sealed plastic and put it back up there when putting the tank back in.

mine ( previous car ) was crumbling to dust and was totally unreadable.. it was a '70. I found it in 2004 or so, so it was almost dust at 34 years old

sure I had the tank sticker, but it didn't show anything..

Mine was there, in good shape, just blank. I can make out a faint box in one corner, but nothing else.

I cant say on how to get it off, but GO SLOW and try to get the glue off the tank and not the paper off the glue.

Well my sticker is probaly in better shape than what you guys are telling me. We can read most of the info withthe naked eye but still real fragile. Just as you said need some type of solvent to release the glue from tank then will scan it in the pc to see how well we can inhance it!
Thanks for the input will try to get the pics to load but will probaly have to get the kid to do it.

If it's legible, you're very lucky.

I don't know of a solvent to use on the old glue since I'm not certain what type of glue was used to stick it on.

Time to get nervous: you could try a razor blade scraper with a new, sharp blade. The intent is to get under the glue and scrape/lift the glue from the tank without damaging the sticker.

Second option is to photograph it well for documentation purposes and leave it there.

Good luck.

Hi wro,
How much of the sheet is actually glued down? Often most of it is loose since only a quick smear of glue was applied.
I used a new razor blade held at a very slight angle to slice the glue loose from the tank, not loose from the paper.
GOOD LUCK!
Regards,
Alan

I did the same thing. Used a razor blade knife to carefully scrape the glue away from the tank. Mine came off very easilly and is in pretty good shape.

do not use a solvent... that could possibly ruin the print on the document.... the razor blade is the best bet..... if you preserve it be sure to use acid free plastic cover. If you choose to laminate ... make a copy and laminate the copy... Congrats on finding your build sheet... we that have them are very lucky.

Thaks gang will try that tonight. Well called the shop that have done tanks for me inthe past and it will be about $250 bucks to dip, clean , and then coat and about 4 days before you can use it. Well got on ebay last night and can pick up a tank kit from Corvette Central for $320 ( tank, straps, vibration stips, rubber filler neck, fuel sender and oick-up) so now leaning that way. Then will save the tank for later. will try to contact Wilcox see if they have a kit deal since have had GREAT luck working with them in the past.

Will try to get the pics posted of what it looked liked. I was really suprised had so much left and could still read it. When we dropped the tank on 72' Malibu SS had to use the pc to inhance it and then read it all. It is neat to see that little bit of history on the car as it would roll down the assembly line years ago.

Thanks Gang wro87

When you dropped the tank, did part of the tank sticker remain on the right side tank strap? It often does (as mine did), tearing part of it away. And the glue attaching that piece to the strap, as well as the tank sticker to the tank, was hard as a rock! I had to chisel it away with a razor blade. But my tank sticker was mostly faded AND was for a different Corvette on the assembly line (a Mille Miglia Red convertible with black vinyl interior)! I have a Sunflower Yellow coupe with a Saddle vinyl interior. It happened! Oh well. At least when part of the tank sticker remains on the strap you know that the tank is original, since it was slapped on top of the tank strapped in place while on the assembly line. I bought a tank kit from CC as well and put the original one out in the trash. Sure there were only 240 LT-1's with A/C built and it was the original tank! But nobody will see the "A" (Anderson) logo missing. I also found an old key that had been dropped in the tank opening who knows when!
