Great articles, Tom - thanks for posting them. Of particular interest is the "73 Vette vs the V-12 XKE". Look at the rear end picture of the 73 and note the exhaust tips - not NCRS correct for a 73. My early (built 10/6/72) is original and has the exact same setup (same body color too).
Were there other 73's that received 72 exhaust tips (at the factory or replacement)?

I had never noticed that. Article is from Jan '95 so these are not new cars. I would bet that when it came time to replace the mufflers they went with 70-72 mufflers which would have required a change in exhaust tips.
My '73s were early builds, sept 72, and they had the correct tips on them when I got them. But cannot vouch for what may have happened before then.

tom...
Once the GM OEM tips and mufflers were discontinued, there were no repro one-year-only parts for '73s available to fill the gap. Owners had no choice but to buy NOS parts at inflated prices or make do with the repro 70-72 parts. '73 muffler hangers weren't available 'till '93 or so AFAIR.
The 73 vs Jag is an interesting write-up.
When I was buying my new 73, this was exactly my decision at the time -12 cylinder jag or a vette.
I loved the look of the 12 cyl. but the rest of the car scared me. The sheet metal looked very flimsy and rust prone. They had some air scopes under the car at the differential to keep the inboard brakes cool that barely cleared the ground. The first rail track would have probably taken them out.
