During the restoration of my 73, I spent a lot of time on the under body.

I removed the factory under coating in the upper wheel wells together with the 30+ years of road grime and smoothed out the factory bonding material.

Since my car did not have a lot of factory black out paint on it, I painted the under body with a single stage urethane that matched the raw glass colour.

The next step for me will be to replicate the factory undercoating to the upper areas of the wheel wells.

Some years only got a squirt of semi-flat black during the blackout process; other years got sound deadener.

3M automotive undercoating in the rattle can is a decent match. It dries dark brown, but can be painted.

For a 'driver' car, the semi-flat black spray paint works well and looks like the original black-out paint. Go to a quarter car wash and shoot the wheelwells really well; use the heavy-duty wheel cleaner and let them soak a bit before you shoot and rinse. Or use your power washer on them. It is surprising how much better the overall car looks when the wheelwells are painted.

Just bought a can of Permatex Heavy Duty Rubberized Undercoating for $6 today. In the ecklers catalog they have the 3M one listed for $125. I wonder why theres such a big price difference or why the 3M one is so special..

I have done alot of experimenting with rattle cans and wheel wells in my days.. I would not go with a total "flat" black paint or it will still look like its 30 years old.. I found "Satin" black to give the best appearance and it will look very similar to todays cars/trucks with the plastic wheel wells, which actually look good when they are clean...

Done a few garage mechanic restoration's and find Rust-Oleum Satin Black good for just about anything under carraige. They also had a Stainless Steel color that worked well for lot's of underhood part's, but not sure it's availible now.
