I have called and spoken to three people so far on 76 and 77 vettes. The all said roughly the same thing- motor was replaced by gm couple years ago. Was there any kind of recall? Is there a way to tell from engine block #'s what year the motor is? What would be the horsepower? I don't know how to tell a L48 to a L 82 when a engine is replaced.
Are you trying to say that the prior owner had an engine change out in that car by a GM dealer? And you want to know more about that engine's capabilities? If so, find out what dealer did the work and ask them what they put in it.
I just thought it was odd that three vettes I called about all had replacement engines put in them a few years ago by GM. I was thinking if these engines were the same or better then the originals in hp. I guess when all said and done it comes down to the stamped #s on the block to identify year. Thanks.
As "KapsSA" said, you're talking about 30 year old cars, in all probability, MANY parts have been replaced over the years. In the "old days", a rebuild would be performed on an engine, but today "crate motors" are the rage, as in many cases they're brand new, come with better quality parts, more HP, and a warranty.
