Has anyone modified a luggage rack to hinge so that when they fuel up they don't have to take everything off the rack and put it on the ground?
Does anyone know of anyone selling sealed carriers that would fit nicely on the rack so when we go on the caravan in a few years it can haul the wife's shoes??????
Just trying to decide how to make this more user friendly.
-Thanks,
Charlie
That's a good point! I always think how useless it is every time I get gas. I wouldn't take it off as it was on the car when I bought it - but have not used it. Maybe if I buy too much at Carlisle - I'll be able to use it!
Interesting that it tilted forward. Unfortunately, tilting forward wouldn't be very helpful since you would have to push the cargo over the top of the car? So I would hinge it in the back and it would need a stop of some sort so that it would stay in place on its own. It would have to be strong enough to hold cargo on 2 legs and not need to be held in place while you are trying to fill the tank. If cargo would fall off it would just hit the ground and not fall on the car.
I just started looking into this. Looks like there are soft cases that may work and would allow my wife to over stuff and ruin the zipper too.
Looks like I will build one. Besides the T-top holder on the rack would work well with the hinge too....
Duer Tube Bending Company made all the GM luggage racks but they never offered one that tilted. The tilt rack was something that was made after-market. I think it's listed in the old TMCS pocket catalog I have.... but I don't have a clue who made them.
I always thought it was a great design and better than the GM rack.
Tilting the rack backwards might offer another challenge. You'd have to fill the tank from the side and then battle the gas door in it's upward state.... Just some food for thought.

I have seen several like the one I pictured. It was very heavy, and tilted forward. Ugly. If the luggage was strapped down somehow, it would be OK for fueling. Orig owner got it from a Chev dealer like a lot of people did.
I found that the Summit Racing 30"X17"X7" fuel cell allows you to slap the fuel tank to the back of the storage compartment with only 7" of fore to aft taken up by fuel tank so.. You have to move the fuel inlet a few inches forward but then you can make a nice trunk (if you run side pipes) I know this is a really radical idea and it would be smart to rework the back frame. This is too radical for me at this point. But it is an idea I thought I would pass on.
I am thinking of making a carrier container which has a hinge and that doesn't stay on car but is just used when we go out of town. I measured and the holes the last owner drilled doesn't match any of the common carriers so. I either have to fill the holes or do a custom.
Thanks for all your suggestions.

I think someone should glass out the bottom two middle mounting holes and then place some hydraulic cylinders in the outer 4 corners and tie them into the frame below. Then you can put a switch on it and raise your luggage a good 8-12 inches off the deck, rack and all.
