I am thinking about buying a 350 HO GM crate engine. It is the deluxe one with 330 hp for my 81 Vette. Have any of you out there gone with this same motor and if so do you think it's a good choice for both regular driving and performance? Where would be the best place to purchase this motor, and would it make sense to go through a GM dealer for installation? I am not the most mechanical person so I would be paying someone to install it. Any advice is appreciated.
well Im not the top expert on the subject, but if budget is you main concern I think there are cheaper options. Looks like that motor is a little over 4K at summit. Why are yo ugoing with a crate motor? Do you have a motor already that could possibly be rebuilt cheaper. Another option would be to find a local speed shop that will do the work. They may offer you a crate motor and give you a core trade for yours. Or even re-use any components from yours that are still good.
So what Im saying is, it depends on your situation. For the money you are spending i am building a 383 with 400+ HP and 400+ lb-ft.
For other crate options, check Summit, Jegs, PAW, and call around to some local shops.
A number of us have the GM 350 HO engine. I have had the Deluxe in mine for 8 years and really like it. VERY reliable, good street manners, and plenty of power for "spirited" daily driving.
I am going to post dyno results and tuning tips in another thread titled "Help me make more power".
If you are not going to do the mechanical work, then your task is really to find a qualified/affordable/trustworthy mechanic...not an engine source. HE/SHE will know where to get an engine that meets your needs. I suggest that you contact a Corvette Car Club or another [general] local car club and ask for recommendation for your mechanical work.
I bought the GM 330hp 350 from Summit two years ago. I have about 5000 miles on it now and it has been great. I do wish it had a bit more power but I am running the stock exhaust manifolds. I think if I put headers on and replaced the 20 year old Midas exhaust, it would pep it up a lot. I was able to re-use most of the stock parts. I had to buy a Melanized (sp) distributor gear, new flywheel, fuel pump push rod and intake manifold. Here are a few pictures.
I have a 350 HO installed in a different car, not the Vette...it's an outstanding engine and makes great power...not the slightest hint of a problem of any kind. I have it topped with Edelbrock EFI...instant starting and will easily smoke the tires if I'm not careful .
I put the 350 HO in my 78 almost 10 years ago. It's a great engine with all the power I need. I used the Edelbrock performer intake and orgionally installed a Holly 750. The 750 seemed to be too much so went back to a Edlebrock 600 and have had no problems since. The manual that came with the engine in 91 recommended the Holly 750, but that recommendation was later changed. I also had to change the flywheel since the bolt pattern is different on the crank with the one piece rear seal. Go for it .... It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
