Hi,
I believe there's a clip on the backend of the door that supposed to hold the door from sliding too easily. You can bend the clip to give it more tension, but the console plate needs to be off to have access to it.
They are available if yours is missing

Alan
The most inexpensive and most effective way to resolve the 'sliding ash tray cover' syndrome is to borrow a technique from "Bubba": remove the cover and run a strip of black/plastic electrical tape on the back of the cover, along each side (do not roll the tape around the edge). The extra thickness of the tape and the friction of the plastic tape against the nylon guide will keep it from rattling or creeping. I "fixed" my cover using that method 5 years ago and it still is in good shape. Of course, I don't smoke, so the door doesn't get a lot of use.
For those of you who think using a 'Bubba' method is always foolish, remember that you can always remove the tape and this fix won't permanently alter or damage anything; it's completely reversible.
Hi,
In 71 the clip I mentioned came in 2 tensions. The first for base and LS5 equipped cars and another with more tension for cars with the LT-! and LS6 optioned cars.

You are kidding ? A touch of black Goop will do the job.
Now, boyz.... Alan71 is just providing you with the correct way to fix the cover. Others (including me) have provided non-standard alternatives. All of the above are valid solutions to the problem you posed. It is your prerogative to select the method you like best. {Don't 'shoot' the messenger...}
Is there some way to tighten the slide that covers up the ashtray? My slide keeps sliding down and I would like it to stay all the way closed.
Do what I do fill it with napkins till its overflowing and shut the door. Anybody else had that little sucker scare em on take off ??
it makes A heluva loud noise when it just slides all the way back by its self.
Mine would slide down as well and it bugged me enough that I finally fixed it one day. My clip would hold it closed but it wasn't positive enough. I suppose I could have messed with it but with my luck I would have broken that sucker.
So, to took a small piece of adhesive backed weather stripping that I had laying around in the garage. It was about 1/2" wide x 1/2" tall and had some adhesive on one side. With the console plate removed, I flipped it over and removed the ash tray door. I then placed the small piece of foam weather stripping at the bottom of the opening (where the door slides under). I then reinstalled the door and the foam compressed enough to provide just enough resistance to hold the door in place. The door still opens and closes easily but it doesn't rattle or open unless I want it to. I keep my fuel receipts in there to track the mileage I am getting so I use it quite a bit.

Hope this helps.
Maybe there are some things" ya just don't wanna know "..

Hi Ernie,
It's amazing how much design time and manufacturing GM put into some things and almost completely ignored other things.

Example:
That clip.
With the side window open 1 inch the rain water runs off the roof
panel and on to your left (driver) or right (passenger) knee.
Hey Alan-
Your exactly right! It does make you wonder.
I put that rain blunder in with Plastic Chromed Vent *****, Dash center bezels that break instantly, and vacuum headlamps. Just think of all the trouble they could have saves us if they would have just used electric motors..
In some cases where the door will not stay closed: inspect the door and you may find some curve to it. Another issue that would cause this is excess play in the slides that the door rides in. The clip should make contact with the shift plate from top to bottom when the door is slide open and closed. Also, you can tweak the clip to create more tension on the shift plate.
