Tim, we installed a stock mid-year drop base air cleaner on a '75 with HEI. We did have to trim the base at the rear as it was touching the ignition shield over the distributor. Since the filter is soft it can touch the shielding without any real issues and the lid of the air cleaner sits above the ignition shielding so it didn't require any modifications. It almost looks like it belongs there. The engine has an Edelbrock and a 600 Holley as well.
I believe that the '81 has the soft shielding, so you may have no clearance problems at all.

GUSTO, Thanks for the info. The dist. shielding is missing on my car so maybe I'll be OK as far as clearance goes.
Tim, depending on the carburetor you're using, the base may still touch the distributor cap. But as I mentioned, just trimming it a small amount was all that was required and the "soft" air cleaner element against the cap (shielding in our case) doesn't cause a problem. You will be very hard pressed to even see the part trimmed from the base if you go that route.
stingraymyway, this is the Air Cleaner we used, but you will want to first determine which side you want the fresh air tube for the PCV system on before deciding which assembly to buy. This one exits on the passenger side and worked best for our engines PCV system. https://www.paragoncorvette.com/p-35...-assembly.aspx
Here's what a typical base looks like (upside down)...
Notice the fresh air tube on the bottom of the base. Some exit on the passenger side and some exit on the drivers side. The assemblies are the same except for the base where the air tube exits. Determining which side is best for your application will save you some aggravation when you try to hook up the PCV system.
