Default steering wheel

I've been thinking about changing the steering wheel due to I just cant seem to get used to the large wheel diameter.
I am just trying to get some opinions on different steering wheels that others may have installed, if you have any pics of aftermarket steering wheels please post up.

I have a later shark TT column in my '72, and changed from the bus driver wheel to the late shark wheel in the install, 15 years ago....

now the TT column limits most installs to the late shark or very close mounting style, due to the Tele lever just behind the horny button....

at this time I have a fairly close even smaller wheel with very close to OEM mounting, it says Corvette, in the leather across the top....

it's cheep sub for a 15 y/o sunlight damaged OEM style wheel....

it's a inch smaller yet in diameter.....

I did the same thing as mrvette, used a 14" padded wheel from a 78' vette on my 71'.

Here is a pic. of the commonly used Grant Corvette replacement wheel. It is about 13 1/2 in. on the outside. It can be used with either column. This wheel is very flat compared to the original wheel and required bending the turn signal lever to use it.

Here is the later model Corvette C-3 wheel, modified by me, and recovered by Chuck Pelton. It is slightly over 14 in. on the outside.

I think the 77 to 81 is ilke the one pictured above. The Mods I mentioned was to mill in the slots and remove the rubber core that was continued onto the spokes from the rim.
The later wheels are solid spokes.

The stock, leather wrapped, 78-82 wheels are 14" diameter and are bolt on. You can get good, used, units off eBay.

78-79 have brushed aluminum spokes; 80-82 have semi-flat black spokes.

There are several Corvette aftermarket places that sell a leather-wrapped 14" wheel that looks very similar to that Pelton wheel for $100. The spokes are chrome plated, instead of brushed finish and it is only sold in black leather. But, I cleaned the leather with solvent, then shot it with my SEM interior vinyl dye to match the color. Worked out well and got no cracking or color bleeding from the wheel. Love it!!!

[I got mine from Rik's Corvette Parts. You might check to see if Forum vendors carry it, also.]

where exactly did you get this done i live in the dallas area, I ordered a 81 model wheel so that it is 14" and it would be awesome to be able to get it covered in a custom fashion, and where did you get the white gauges?

redcruz1120 told me about it last year. I am sending mine to them in about 2 weeks. Give them a call or an email.

I finally made a decision and purchased a wheel from ecklers figured I would post a couple of pics, there are also plans on sending it to get a different cover when I decide on a new interior color. Thanks to everyone that posted pictures. Please ignore the tach I need to figure out how to reset it to zero.

I'm looking to replace the wheel on my fathers '69. Are all the stock wheels 14"?

The car will get a power rack & pinion soon, so i'm thinking a 12" wheel may be more sporty. Do you think that will look too small?

Thanks,
Chris

i would definitely say 12" would look small, my stock wheel was huge compared to the new 14" it feels a lot more sporty than before. I think the stock size is 15 or 16 inches not 100% sure though somebody that knows should chime in soon.

'68->16" w/ plastic simulated-wood grain.
'69->15" w/ black-grained vinyl trim.
Both brushed finish on the spokes.

The wheel you chose is the same wheel I bought from Rik's. You can use vinyl dye (SEM ColorCoat is my choice) to recolor it the same as the interior. Great wheel for the money.

That looks like the same wheel I bought at Carlisle this year. If I had brought a Philip's head screw driver with me, I could have changed it in the parking lot in 10 minutes. It looks good, makes the car easier to get in and out of, and makes it easier to steer, especially when downshifting a turn. A home run of a mod if you ask me
