Default Engine compartment detailing question

What product do detailers use under the hood,..to give the engine bay that new car look?

I know they spray everything under the hood with some product, but it's not all oily and sticky like Armour All or Tire Shine. Anyone have any idea?

After a good de-greasing, and rinsing, I've been using a product called "Pig Spit". Check out the link below. It works GREAT! I figure, if the Harley people love it, it's got be good....and it is!

I actually used a silicone spray on my 96 Impala SS, gave the hoses that semi-sheen look, but now I use the following product to wipe the hoses and it is good for plastic areas also with Turtle Wax F21 Protectant
http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_1...e=00-2229915-2
Available everywhere from Walmart to Advance Auto. I also use this on tires, not that glossy wet look, has a nice semi-sheen to it AND IT WILL NOT ROT YOUR RUBBER LIKE ARMOR-ALL!!!!!!!! Take the bottle and spray the eng comp and take a wipe and wipe the area down. Good for interiors also.....................

If you want that 'new car look' under the hood, you'd have to give it a fresh coat of semi-flat black paint. That's what the factory used for 'blackout' paint (engine compartment, wheel wells, etc.). There was no "dressing" of any kind used by the factory for these areas.

Soap, water, and elbow grease. There is no spray on miracle-in-a-can.

As far as 'detailing' item in the engine compartment, I have found nothing better for rubber or plastic hoses, tubes, components than Nu-Vinyl. Google it on the web for info. It drys clear, is semi-shiny (not glossy like silicone or oil-based 'protectants', doesn't peel, seals the surface and minimizes dirt adhesion, and you don't need to strip it to add another layer/coat. Great stuff!! I originally used it on my interior components [perfect for them]; but quickly found that it worked very well on leather steering wheel, tires, and the stuff under the hood. Try it...you will wish you had learned of it sooner.

Hi v76,
I've always had good results with a bit of hard work. I think 'clean' looks good and is pretty easy to maintain once you get it clean.
Regards,
Alan

Turtle wax makes something called CD2 that is really good. Here is a link. http://www.turtlewax.com/main.taf?p=2,2,2,1

Just hit the engine minues electrical stuff like the alternator with degreaser and spray this on after. It makes a nice shine.

If you do not mind the slight oil, I use WD-40 a lot as well.

What you're seeing here is that there are many different surfaces that require different treatments. Engine compartment walls require a blackout paint (i.e., John Deere Blitz Black), hoses require a silicon product, engine paint, and than just basic soap, water and elbow grease for many other items such as wires, valve covers.

Though I have never used it....I know of a lot of detailers that swear by this stuff. Its called CD2 Engine Detailer, and can be purchased at any or all the stores noted above.

As it was explained to me, you still must have the engine bay relatively clean... having removed all the heavy grease, oil, and dust, etc. But not squeaky clean. Then just spray it on / over everything. It will appear very shiney at first, but disapates once the engine is run for a while.

Now, as mentioned in a few posts already, don't expect this product or any other type product to give you the results of Alan's 71 or eastltd's 73 engine bay. That takes an enormous amount of good ole fashioned elbow grease, complete dismantling / removal of the engine, and then a complete restoration of the engine bay and all its componets, to include paint.

Give the CD2 a try, and report back as to how it worked for you....maybe take a before and after photo to share here with others looking to do the same.

Stay in tune....
