" Im suprised no one does what I do :
Feed the wild cats in the neighbor Hood They bring me moles and mice right up to the porch and I trade them for cat food. "
Agree, Cats are the only way to go, Tried all of the other remedies, none as good as Cats. Plus critters smell the cats around and avoid the premises. And FINALLY trained the little b*@#%*^!'s to only get on the Corvette when I am not around!
One other thought, I have fought with boat covers for years, similar problem with cars and concluded it is better to build a little cover with 4 posts, simple frame and flat tin or fiberglass roof over the vehicle and then cover it.
For the last couple of years I put a few mothballs in dryer sheets and tied them up with twist-ems. I put 8-10 of them scattered around the under the hood and another bunch in the wheel wells and under the car. I also put a piece of aluminum foil held by a rubber band over the end of the exhaust pipes. I've had no problems with the vette stored in a tent garage.
I tried mousetraps but never caught a single one. They'd steal the bait....occasionally they'd steal the whole trap! Seems we have some pretty sophisticated hoidy-toidy vermin here in the city.
If you're using the cheepo small metal clip trap's, the mice will do this. I use traps with the large plastic cheese looking tripper's facing the garage wall's and catch them all the time. Mice like to travel along walls, and sometime's just step on the the trap tripper's by accident.
Not much you can do about the engine compartment when the car's stored outdoors! At best you can protect the interior by having it sealed closed and make sure that vents and heater controls are in the closed position. Try to remove all food before closing up!
Put it away clean, sealed up and patrol the area on a regular basis with little Wiener Hunting dogs
I had a Bronco riddled with mice after one Michigan winter. They crawled up under the dash and made nests in the firewall insulation. I didn't prepare to keep them from getting in though as I only used the Bronco to plow the driveway but thought i still used it enough to deter them. Nope! I'm not too fond of mice anyway so I almost burned the thing to the ground to get rid of them. Instead, I sold all of the mice and gave the Bronco away free. And yes I told the new owner.
As 78pace said, dryer sheets has always worked for me but get good name brand ones. I used some cheap dollar store generic ones one time in my shed and the mice ate em.
good luck,
Terry
I always use those little green blocks at all of my garage doors and when I was working on the car, I use moth ball/flakes around the tires and anywhere they can climb into the car. FWIW, I've seen on TV a device you plug into a socket of a extension cord and the device give's off a fatal attraction to critters and they never come back, But whether it works or not I can't say. Moth ball flakes have always worked for me. Likewise, Good luck !
I've always had trouble with the mice at my hunting camp trailer in the wintertime. Tried every home remedy out there. I finally bought some Sunbeam electronic rodent repellers at the hardware store. They plug in to the electrical outlets and emit a very high frequency sound that drives the rodents away. Haven't had any critters since the install. Maybe run an extension cord to the car and use these things inside and under the hood. It's worth a try if it keeps the critters out!
