All of the trim screws came out, but all the rocker panel screws broke.
I would just drill it out and retap it. Then you don't have to bother with a nut in the back etc. You put the Original type screws back in as how the factory did it.
Make sure the first drill is small and a centered pilot hole. Then redrill it a little larger but smaller than original thread size so you have enough metal to retap the hole which is a fine thread.
Hope this helps.

Many of those screw holes are actually T-nuts that are spot welded to the backside of the rocker panel. You can drill them out or just drive them out; then epoxy another 10-24 T-nut in place and put the screws (stainless, this time) back in place. The end screws use sheet metal 'nuts' anyway.
I had sAme problem on my 71. The stock screws protrude out the other side of the nut. I was able grab the screw with vice grips and screw them out the back side. I had one that did require drilling and tapping.
Jack the car up so you can get eye level and drill in the center of the screw.
