Default 72 rear window storage coupe

I have looked at the catalogs and the rear window storage handle only goes up to 71. What is different with 72? My car has a piece of flat metal under the deck, but it looks like it has been broke. I have bought the tray that was missing. The metal block with the words rear window storage is also missing. I noticed Eckler's has it,the bracket also, but again it goes to 71. I am confused. My 71 is a vert so no help there.

Hi b10,
Is the tray you bought for a 71 or 72? Does it have the push button that makes it a 72 tray or not?
This is a 71 tray and latch.
Regards,
Alan

The tray I have purchased has a push button in the center, similiar to a rear compartment latch. What goes on under the deck for it to latch to and does it have ''Back window storage'' piece like in your picture?
Thanks for the info, so confused.

Also I purchased some anti rattle blocks from a vendor for the rear shelf.

3 cubes of foam that go on to hold the window tight it would appear.

Any ideas where they go...on the tray.

Craig

Hi Craig,
THOSE I know about!
They go on the same fiberglass surface as the catch your picture shows on the underside of the rear deck, not on the window tray. My 71 had 3 too. One was a little fatter and went right in the middle and the other two about eighteen inches to each side. If you close the tray with the window in it you can see where they need to be to act as a cushion for the glass.
They're shown in the 71 AIM, BUT I can't find them today.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan

I have looked at this and cant work out how they could attach to the fiberglass bulkhead (same one as latch) and come in contact with the window when its in the storage position.

Any chance of a picture.

Regards

Craig

My 72 does not have a ''Back window storage'' label piece, just the push-button latch. I'll be working on the car tomorrow so I'll try to remember to take a picture of the latch mechanism and post it.

I'm sure this has been posted before...this latch is on early 1971 cars. (I seem to remember yours is a January car, Alan?) They switched to the push button on later cars. I have a 3/30/71 and 5/21/71 and both have the push button storage tray.

Hi Frog,
You're right.... mid -January 71 built car.
I show red on the latch... there actually was a bit of red overspray on it, but not nearly what it has now.
I can't imagine that the latch was in place when the body was painted so it must have happened during some touch-up around the rear window area of the deck.

Alan

Hi Craig,
I lied!!!
The pads cushion the TRAY not the REAR WINDOW.
I can tell where the pads were because the remains of the adhesive is still on the fibeglass.
I first show where the pads HIT the tray and then where the pads are stuck on the fiberglass.
I'm sorry for any confusion I caused.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for the shots Alan.

Now I understand exactly what you meant.

There are a few more differences then from early/late 71 for the tray.

My tray has rubber cushions in both outer spots where you have used the smaller blocks.

I am thinking ( and i have tested it) that if I place the foam blocks mid tray (as per photos) all the rattle goes away when the glass is in.

Possibly not the correct spot but fixes my rattle concern.

Interesting all the small changes along the way.

Regards

Craig

Hi Craig,
Interesting info and pictures.
I didn't know about the change to the bumpers. That seems like a nice improvement. I wonder if the pads stopped when the latch changed? Or before or after?
Thanks again.
Regards,
Alan

These things interest me, but I'm very easily amused in my old age.

I want to thank all who have responded and posted pictures. It is clearer on what I have. My tray I bought is correct, the latch is there and is correct, now to check the rear brackets. Previous owner had put a speaker system across the rear bulkhead. Thanks again for the help.

Hi B10,
Here are the brackets.
There's a screw with nylon bushing that goes through the bracket on the rear corner of the tray and threads into the bracket.
Regards,
Alan
