I just bought a replacement lock set for the ignition switch and doors. The AIM has instructions for assembling the ignition switch, but nothing in regards to removal of the old one. And, of course, no instructions came with the new lock set. Anyone know the 'secret' for removal of ignition lock in a '71 coupe? Also, any advice on changing door locks will be much appreciated.
I changed all my locks about 2 years ago. Seems like I used one of the steering column rebuild how-to guides to figure out how to remove the ignition switch. I don't remember the specifics, but there is a notch that you will be sticking a small screw driver into to release the ignition switch and it will slide right out...that is after pulling the wheel and its hub.
The doors just have a slide clip that holds them tight...it is a lot easier to remove than to put back on. I remember using needle nose pliers to get it in place and then a long large flat screw driver to push the clip. It was enough of a hassle that I still haven't done the passenger side.
Along with the papers,
The only problem may be the almost seized lock tab, here is the proper location and a lot of penetrant may be needed to depress the tab.
On the door locks, the side of a cold chisel between the lock and clip tab, then lever the chisel down, gives enough force to remove clip.

If I recall correctly, I think the ignition switch needs to be in the on or unlocked position too.
