Default Sounds impossible but true

I've been working on a '79 coupe for a year and will paint it this week. The car has been disassembled for painting. Hood ,bumpers, doors, t-tops are all off of the car. When I started it to put it in my trailer everything was fine. I drove the car into the trailer and cut the engine off and disconteced the battery. As I was leaving the trailer a loud BEEP ................. BEEP ............... BEEP started coming from the car. It sounded like it was coming from the t-top center bar area. How could this be happening with the battery positive cable disconected. The BEEPING stopped so I conected the battery and started it again. After I cut it off and disconected the positive cable from the battery it started BEEPING again. I pushed the alarm button on the cowl in the engine compartment 3 or 4 times and the Beeping stopped. I could not get it to BEEP any more. Does anyone know what the BEEPING was coming from and where. It must be an alarm of some type but how could it possibly work with the battery disconected. Strange but true!!!

It probably has it's own 'backup' rechargable battery that powers the alarm in case the battery wire is cut. Good luck finding it all.

I have been looking at the owners manual and several other publications but can't find any thing about the alarms or the location of them. I know there is a switch on the doors, one on each t-top and one on the hood. The car has been apart for nearly a year and has been started and moved around many many times with no alarms going off so why now and where does the power come from.

i'm also assuming there is a backup of some sort that would insure the alarm would sound if power to the car (in an attempt to steal it, etc) was cut off.

There is no battery backup on the factory alarm system. With the battery disconnected, everything should be dead.

Wonder if a PO installed an aftermarket alarm?

I'm sure it must be an aftermarket alarm system added by a PO.

I see no evidence of an aftermarket alarm system. Where is the factory alarm sounder located or does the factory alarm system use the horns as the alarm sounder. The BEEP ....... BEEP sound seemed to come from the middle of the t-top center support. When I get the car from the paint shop I will remove the interior molding from the center bar to see what is there. I'm sure there is someone on the forum that has heard their alarm sound before.

The factory alarm horn is mounted behind the left rear wheelwell...nowhere close to the T-tops center brace. There is very little else it can be than an 'added' theft alarm. The usual place for installing such a system is behind the left-forward trans console access cover. A small alarm signal 'speaker' could be hidden under the center bar cover.
