Default 69 Shift Console Re-paint

I have the shift console out of my 69 (automatic, no air) and stripped for repainting and have a few questions that I would appreciate input on:

1) from Forum searches, it seems like SEM Trim Black is the preferred paint glossiness for the shift console - please confirm this

2) from my examination of my console (which I believe to have the original finish but you never know), the area (or quadrant) around the automatic shifter, the ash tray door and the area around the three fiber optic lenses appears to be slightly glossier than the rest of the console and definitely more glossy than SEM Trim Black. Can someone with an original car confirm this? (if so, I have satin black paint that is higher gloss than the SEM Trim Black which I will use)

Any and all help will be appreciated

I used Krylon Semi Flat Black(top of cap) - Code 1613 Semi Gloss Black is what the tag reads and its the industrial and not retail one. Retail one has a different formula.
It is dead on. I've done lots of consoles and this is it. You can also use it for the inner fenders, under hood and other areas.

Sem Trim black has more flatness. I used this on my Pathfinder rear bumpers and it came out dead match.

I use this in combination of a Gloss black and Sem Trim black on parts that need a little duller gloss. ie brackets or even the A arm.

Hope this helps.

Yes - I read all the posts about the Krylon re-formulation and the consensus was that the SEM Trim Black and Deere Blitz were the best alternatives.

My question however is whether or not certain areas (e.g. ashtray door, area around auto shifter and area around the three fiber optic lenses) are of a higher gloss than the other areas??? Thanks - Joe

Thanks - Your console looks great - so you used just one level of glossiness on all areas?

I would think all the areas would be the same color and gloss!

I imagine the difference in the look is from the texture of the different areas of the console. Paint it all with one color.
As for the how, I prefer to paint the whole thing and use a smooth cloth with lacquer thinner to wipe off the paint where I don,t want it.

I masked all the areas that needed to remain chrome. It is alot of work, and takes a few hours of love, I also have done the instrument panels the same way with masking, and then I take a razor blade flat on the surface to remove the paint, from all the letering to bring back the chrome finish.

Hi,
I still believe in painting the whole part and then using a new x-acto blade of various shapes to slice the paint off the raised chrome areas as soon as the paint 'flashes'. The paint is soft enough to come off in long 'strings' but they don't stick to the painted surface if they happen to touch. I use a very soft paint brush to sweep the 'strings' out of the way.
Good Luck! It's a very rewarding job.
Regards,
Alan

PS: As of a couple of months ago the original formula #1613 was still available from 'industrial' suppliers. I bought some from a company in California at a reasonable price after a heads-up from a CF member.

Thanks Alan - I was hoping you would weigh in.

I also took your advice from a past post and picked up some of the X-acto #17 blades which I think will be very useful for getting the paint off the letters on the upper console, like "volume" and "tuning" - I had painted the upper console before and those letters are extremely hard to get the paint off of using the "lacquer thinner cloth method"

To get back to my original question, I looked again last night at the gloss of the SEM Trim Black and I think it would look appropriate on the "grained" part of the console but think I need to bump the glossiness up for the ashtray door and the area around the auto shifter (different than what you have with the four speed)

Hi 427,
I really think using the same gloss level for all the black paint is more than satisfactory.
Just the fact that the pieces are painted seperately gives them enough of a variation in gloss level if you think you need it.
Every thing was done with #1613.
Regards,
Alan

In fact, I just repainted the black areas on my door sill plates for the first time and used #1613 for them too.

Hi Joe,
Thank you VERY much!
No, they're baggies. I polished the ss pedal trim so I'm protecting them.
Really... thank you!

Alan
