Default am I crazy?

Am I crazy to want to drop the tank on my 77, to see if the sheet is there? Since I got the car it's been in the back of my head wondering if it's there or not. Is it difficult to do? I already tried to see with a mirror, but don't have any small enough. Can't see anything from the filler lid either.

Go for it!

I doubt you'll be able to see it through the filler door. It should be on the top/front side of the shield on the driver side (toward the front of the car). Like here -

Our '77s have the tank shield as noted above. I had to drop all spare tire carrier pieces, exhaust, fuel tank and crossmember, then tank shield. My sticker was in poor shape or more correctly the ink that was used had mostly faded out. The best piece of info legible was the dealer that my car was delivered to. Glasscock Chevy, Big Lake, TX. mike...

If there was any chance that the sheet was still in place on my '69 I would go for it. Unfortunately, the PO had replaced the fuel tank and had junked the old tank. When I ask him if he had found the sheet he said he had but just thrown it away with the tank. He wasn't a real Corvette guy.

Well I guess tomm, I'll start the task. Anyone have any short cuts or things to look out for when dropping the tank?

How about one of those small cameras plumbers use to look inside pipes...
Might be worth looking into b4 dropping the tank to see if there is really a sheet there..
Just a thought.

This is probably a good time to replace the rubber fuel lines (that tie into the steel lines running to the front). After 33 years they may be deteriorating.

Also, you may want to look at the sock on the fuel sending unit to see if it needs to be replaced.

I also posted some pics in this thread that may help you with the removal -

Good luck!

Well I went under the car, took the spare off. And could see the top edge of the tank. No paper I left the spare tire off with its cradle. The spare has some weight to it! Took some pic's of everything. Could someone help decode the letters on the spare rim for me?

mine (78) was pretty much in the same location. when i had all the suspension and rear out of the car to be rebuilt, i could see the edge of the form peeking out from the top edge. unfortunately, once the tank was down and the paper examined, it was virtually blank with all the ink having been vaporized and dried out over the years. it was obvious in one or two places that there had been printing on it at one time as there were very faint images of "something" still there, but nothing more. i hope if you drop the tank, you have better luck than i did.

I may have misunderstood you/the pics, but the sheet isn't located on the tank. It's on the shield that covers the tank. In your pictures it is the black metal piece above and around the tank. In other words, the sheet would be on the other side of that shield (towards the body).

Thank you, I was wondering about that. But I do not remember seeing a shield. I assumed that was the fiberglass of the rear deck. I'll have to take another looksee.

Dave. In your pic. marked 26 11:02 AM the bolts above the diff. are the bolts that hold the shield in place. There are about 12/15 1/2in. headed bolts that hold the shield in place. mike...

'78 glued directly to the top of the tank. Driver side top front edge. Is '77 different? I don't recall a shield up above there.

Once the tank is out, you will then need to remove the shield. It's a series of bolts attached to the frame on all sides.

Edit- Mike beat me to it.

Also your rally wheels are AZ - which is correct for the Vette. Also 2 - 9 means a maunfacturing date of February 9th. You should see a 7 (for 1977) somewhere around there too or in the center of the wheel. Mine were marked K-1-6 and 9 - 15 which means the were made 9/15/76. This makes sense as my '77 was made in October of '76.

I JUST WENT IN THE GARAGE, I FOUND IT!!!!! iTS THERE WITH GOOD INK!!!! THANKS..... Now next week my days off I have to remove the tank. The only hard part I see is getting it out between my mufflers. My exhaust is all welded. But I believe I can do it. I can't belive it. I undid those bolts that you just mentioned, I pulled back the tin. All kinds of dirt fell out! I took a mirror and saw the paper with all ink. I am hyped up now.

Without the spare tire carrier and all, I am able to reach my hand up there and touch mine. I pulled on it a bit and I heard it rip, so I stopped. I guess if I want to really remove it I would have to drop the tank. Good luck.
