Perhaps you should first unwad your panties, and then learn how to use a dictionary seeing as Merriam Webster (which you linked) clearly states that "gage" is an acceptable variant spelling of "gauge".

Hi,
I'm sitting in a room with an UNABRIDGED Webster's Third International Dictionary. All 2662 pages of it, at about 20 lbs.
I would have bet on gauge ONLY, but gage is a variation.
If it's o.k. I'll still type gaUge!
Regards,
Alan

Come on guys....cut him a little slack....

Everyone gets a little nutty sometimes...

Anyway - it IS a good question and like I said, being a machinist for 25 years - I've heard it asked many times...

Let's all get a beer !

Most go by what is acceptable..
Gauge - used to name an instrument for measurement (fuel gauge)
Gage - used to define a measurement (24 gage wire)

GM 'invented' the word "gage". In the 1950's, they decided that the "u" was unnecessary and that typists' time would be saved by eliminating the "u" from the word. That variation never was made official in any reputable dictionary.

By the way....they both sound the same when you say them.

Possibly, that way GM could save some money LOL I am just glad this is not a useless thread and we all are getting some brain matter flowing. Al

Incorrect, Webster recognizes it as an acceptable variant spelling.

Ya know what- you're right. I spent the last few hours saying 'them' to everybody I met. Nobody could tell the difference!

Guage is how I always mis-spell it so I'd like to add the 3rd version to the mix ...

I saw in another past post from "Roger" that he was refering to instuments and casually spelled it "gages". I really think now if you are talking about GM instuments it must be spelled "gages" and any other car maker "gauges" Hum

Don't use me as any kind of guideline , I did good to get through English with a C.
Most of the time I try to spell it gauges. If I'm referring to a fuse for the gauges I try to spell it the way its spelled on the fuse-box.
Up to 1980 its spelled gauges ,81 and 82 its spelled gages.
I will say my spell check will alert me if I use the gages spelling.
