I took my '77 corvette to the shop a few weeks back because the brake pedal was feeling spongy (I previously bled them to try and fix it, but the problem came back after a couple weeks, it is not leaking from what I can tell) and they said my brake master cylinder was going bad. (~$250 to replace I was told)
I would like to replace this myself with the help of a couple of my friends, but I need to know which Brake Master Cylinder will work well with my car.
I'm not sure how confident I am in Amazon's "make sure it fits" option so I wanted to confirm with a couple of you that this part will work well. If it doesn't and you have a better suggestion then I'm all
Why fool with Amazon? You can get a new/remanufactured master cylinder over the counter at the generic auto parts places. The Corvette aftermarket providers also carry them.
Power brakes were standard on the 77s so you will want a master cylinder for power brakes.
I just replaced the MC on my car. The actual replacement time is significantly less than the time it took to find a suitable gasket and retainer for the back end of the MC that butts up to the vacuum booster. I ended up cutting a gasket to fit out of rubber and re-using the retainer.
Make sure to follow the instructions on bench bleeding the MC and then bleed the brakes thoroughly and you will be good to go.
Excepting the gasket issue, It took me 2 hours from start to end. Total cost? $80-ish.
