Did all 69 L-46 cars come with air injection emission systems from the factory?
I don't believe the 49 state 70 L-46 cars did.
But yet all 70 the LT-1's got it.
Is this right? If so, does anyone know why that is?
gm would not have installed that intricate, expensive, well engineered piece of crap in their cars unless they were required to by our overlords. it is as simple as that...

But if it was introduced and became a requirement in 1969 wouldn't the following years require it too?
They only kept it on the LT-1. Not even the 454 got it.
The very same system came back a couple of years later with even more intricate, expensive, well engineered pieces of crap.
And it came back on all cars.
probably in 1970 there was a different set of emmission requirements, or GM found other ways to reduce emissions so the air pump was not needed..
i am sure there were teams and teams of people working 40 hour weeks trying to understand and comply with the government regulations. and they experimented with any number of potential solutions..

Hi,
I don't mean to start a 'ruckus' here.
My understanding has been that the AIR system was first put on the high performance engines in order to maintain their performance. The AIR system allowed the high compression ratios, carb settings, and timing and advace, to be maintained while meeting the new EPA requirements.
The low performance engines didn't get the AIR system but had their compression ratios dropped as part of the 'fix'. (Cheaper and who cared?) Thus the 300 hp engine dropped to 270 hp.
The L-88, tri-power, LS-6, and LT-! engines all had AIR, AND high performance.
Regards,
Alan
That makes sense.
I guess the reason all the 69's got it and the 70's didn't will still remain a mystery though.
Maybe it has something to do with the "Why 69's considered to be the best year of the C3" sort of thing.
Thanks for you help.
