I believe pressing the button does the trick and admit the button on the switch in my 68 is a finicky thing. I have to get it just right before it releases the rod.

While your here.. as I recall it was Rick that has the 68 parts car - right?

Use varying degrees of pressure on the button while simultaneously pulling and pushing (not enough to push it back in, just a slight nudge) on the rod. Eventually the stars in heaven will align properly and it will release.
I had issues with mine too. The correct method is Pull **** out to stop, push release button, push **** in to stop, pull **** completely out... There's nothing finicky about it (unless you've got Easy Mike's switch). You'd think it'd be published somewhere

You don't have my switch.
I can push it once and it will refuse to release the rod. Push it a second time holding my tongue correctly, and rod releases like it should.

I stand corrected...I broke my first switch trying to figure this out.
I updated my post, the correct method (just tried it again)...

There's a little "spanner socket" tool to undo the nut in the front of the dash that holds the switch on. A must have.

It's a VERY VERY VERY nice to have. Not impossible w/o it, but you'll be happy to have it. I used a VERY wide screwdriver. The socket is the right way.
