Default Replacing dash vents

New to the forum...just purchased replacement air conditioning vents for my '81. The originals were faded and cracked. Figured it would be a simple pop out the old and snap in the new. Not so. Before I detroy the dash, has anyone done this before and can you please advise on the steps?

I've tried rotating the vents in both downward and upward positions and applying some mild pressure to pull them out. I'm hoping I don't have to go in through the back.

Look forward to your replies.

The ones in the center gauge cluster come out from the back side after you take the spring clips off.

Do you have the assembly instruction manual (AIM)? The AIM shows how they are mounted. If memory serves, they come out from the backside of the dash but don't quote me on that.

I do not have the AIM. So it looks like I'm going to need to remove the front dash plate/cluster gage in order to get into the back of the center vents. I started this process yesterday; but then shut it down and decided to look through some forums. I must have been on the right track.

I can reach up and feel the outer vents with my hand. I hope those come through the back without pulling any srews. I guess I'll need to get on my backside and take a better look from the floor boards.

You need a copy of the AIM for your year car. "Flying blind" is no way to work on an old car. You will break things if you disassemble/assemble improperly. Spend a few bucks and you will improve your work efficiency and sleep better at night.

"Flying blind"...well said. I'll take the advise and track one down. I'm a novice...is this something one would typically order on-line?

Yep. All the aftermaket providers carry the AIMs. You can get them hard copy or on CD. I like the hard copy type. The best deal comes with a 3 ring binder to put them in.

Do you have an owner's manual for your 81? If not, order a repro when you order the AIM.
