Hi,
The original size was F70-15.
The modern equivalent is 215-70-15.
The original tires were about 27" tall.
So a tire about that height seems to fill the body wheel opening pretty well.
Most people like a tire a bit wider than the original.
The width is up to you.
Regards,
Alan

FWIW, I ran P245/60/15 T/A's on factory 8" wheels on my '72 with no clearance problems what so ever.

Not everyone is so lucky. You can put 235 width tires on all '70-72 cars without rubbing. Any larger than that is a 'crap shoot'. Whether you choose 60 series or 70 series tires is your personal choice. 70 series is what the factory put on, so it is 'correct' for the car; 60 series will handle better and (IMO) look better.

That's highly subjective, as IMHO there's beauty in both form and function, but IMHO it's hard to beat a 245/60 on 15x8 rims. FWIW, standard math puts the 245/60R15 at 26.57" in diameter.

Default Tire sizes.

I just happen to be playing around with tire sizes this past weekend.
I am currently running 255/60-15's on my Chevelle with a 15X8 Corvette rally.
I wanted to see if I if I had any clearance or rubbing issues with that combination on the Corvette. To my surprise, I had no rubbing problems with the 255's backing up in reverse with the steering wheel full lock.
I did have slight rubbing under the same condition with the 225/75-15 that were on the Corvette.
I know that the 225/75 is taller than the 255/60 but it's also considerably more narrow.
Like 7t1vette said, It's a crap shoot on how wide of a tire you can get away with but the 255's fit great on my 70.
The only down side of the wider tire (for me anyway) is they tend to wander in the grooves of the road more.
Hope this little bit of information is useful for you.
And this post would be useless without pics so here they are.
